I thought it might be cool to have a "Movie Nights" thread where members may talk about get-togethers they've hosted or have attended at some of their friends' or relatives' homes.
I've always had fairly frequent Movie Nights with friends, but I'm trying to make them more regular if I can.
Friday, 4/21/06:
I had three friends to my apartment for a Movie Night.
I started out by playing three horror soundtrack CD's on my stereo (in "shuffle" mode) while we settled in and talked for about an hour, with random horror/sci-fi trailers playing on TV with no sound (letting the music take over).
I ordered a couple of pizzas and we chowed down on them while we watched vintage Drive-In Theater ads and "snack bar" intermission reels.
We began the show with a Three Stooges short (THREE LOAN WOLVES) and then went into our first offbeat feature, THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS!
We took a break and watched another Three Stooges short, G.I. WANNA HOME -- and then continued with John Carradine hamming it up in THE UNEARTHLY. We had a ball with this one and it felt like CITIZEN KANE in comparison to our first feature! But at this point it was still only about 10:30 pm, which was too early for "Time-for-go-to-bed"....
The night was still young and we winged it by showing another "bad" film, Jerry Warren's TEENAGE ZOMBIES. Yeah, I know these are three less-than-stellar movies to start off with, but we love stuff like this in addition to the classics which are kind of tired. It's fun to go crazy once in awhile.
I also ran a very funny PLANET OF THE APES spoof from SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (1993), when Charlton Heston hosted the show and at the beginning falls asleep in his dressing room only to awaken thousands of years in the future and finds the show dominated by an all-ape staff who chase him down the halls and throw a net over him.
The night was a big success, and everyone seems anxious for the next one. All sorts of double features were being suggested on the way out. My problem is, I get Friday/Saturday off only once every 6 weeks -- but we'll play it by ear for now. There will be weeks where others may join us, or some may drop out -- but as long as I can entertain at least one of my friends, I'm happy.
"It's MORE ... than a hobby!"
