Feb 3 06 2:37 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Good review, Bill, As for the reaction of kids in a theatre, let me say it was very well received at the matinee in Chico, CA last Saturday. There wasn't an empty seat to be had, and at the end, there was much applause. I was wondering if age and cynicism is affecting me, but I find it interesting that the most enjoyable, not neccessarily the best, but the most enjoyable movies I have seen of late are both "children's movies", Nanny McPhee and Hoodwinked. Sophmoric or hip comedies bore me, slasher and psychological thrillers have no interest, roller-coaster-thrill ride, no-thought- to-them action films have checking my watch and regretting I ate all the popcorn during previews. I found the aforementioned kids movies amusing and, unlike other recent movies, felt better after watching them. Today is only Yesterday's Tomorrow

Feb 3 06 10:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I took my kids to see NANNY McPHEE last Saturday, and in the end of the film, the theater did erupt in applause, and both my kids (girl 8, boy 3) and I all loved the movie. I agree it isn't nearly as funny as they like to make it out to being, but it is an unbelievably "charming" movie. I also found it kind of cool that three of our stars were in the wonderful LOVE ACTUALLY.

And definitely the most laughs I've had in a two hour span in some time. I'm sure for a lot of us, some of the bits hit close to home (as David has pointed out on another thread) but it was the source of great humor, not embarrassment. Much like a Farrely Brothers pic, it's jammed with a lot of gags - not all work, but there's enough there to keep you laughing throughout.

Scared the dogs, in fact. I hardly ever do that anymore -- I don't find much of today's humor to be "funny." But even though the punchline was telegraphed, I still howled when the phrase, "Teach me," was uttered. Abrams has become "flavor of the month" based on the large and loyal fan base of LOST, though that series seems to be losing momentum as the island's increasingly never-ending supply of inhabitants have reach ridiculous proportions and the mysteries introduced cannot reasonably expect to be satisfactorily solved. (Certainly Abrams' truly idiotic script for ARMAGEDDON tends to be overlooked). That Paramount has entrusted the future of the STAR TREK franchise to Abrams helps to seal his reputation as the "go-to" guy (and keeps him on the Paramount lot).

I'm pretty skeptical about Abrams myself, but that particular screenplay was the work of all the credited writers--and about 20 more besides. The producers had the braindead idea of having writers work just on specified pages--here, Fred, you do the 14th rewrite of pages 5-21, here Joe, you do the 7th rewrite of pages 22-30. And look at the movie that resulted from this kind of thinking.

Actually, the big boost that J.J. got from LOST was his direction of the pilot. Tom Cruise was also a big fan of ALIAS, J.J. Abrams's real signature show; MI3's Kerri Russell is from FELICITY, J.J.'s show before ALIAS. Although many people keep referring to LOST as "J.J. Abrams's show," keep in mind that he's only one of three of that program's creators, and he really hasn't been involved on a day-to-day basis since halfway through season one. LOST is much more Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse's show - and has been for some time.
