Everyone? I think you're hearing--or remembering--only what you or any self-respecting Mets fan (if there is such a thing) chooses to remember. Yes, there was some discussion in the media about Torre's future. That discussion was, I assume, inspired by Steinbrenner's noted, and long-past, penchant for firing underachieving managers. But virtually every fan response I heard (not 'everyone', but almost) shot down the notion of firing Torre.
By the by, congratulations on your team's finally hiring a good manager. Willie Randolph will be a great one, and he's only the third-best ex-Yankee to manage the Metropolitans!

Yes, it is. My comment about 'self-respecting' fans was...how plain can I make this?...A JOKE. I am one of the few sports fans who cheers for all the local teams. The Yankees are my team, yes, but I'd like nothing better than for the Mets to meet the Yankees every single year in the Series. My mother, who lives in Indiana, and who has spent maybe two weeks total in NY in her life, has been a fervent Mets fan ever since Ed Kranepool. Every birthday and Christmas I have to trek to the Mets Store to find something Momma doesn't already have. When I moved to NYC in '83, I became an immediate Mets fan. It was an exciting time. Gooden and Stawberry were on the horizon and the '86 Series was one of the great sports experiences of my life. I switched to the Yanks (back to the Yanks, actually, I had been a huge Mantle fan as a kid) not when the Mets went bad, but when they went boring. When they got rid of Lenny and Mookie, when Darryl and Doc went into re-hab, there was no joy in Mudville, Queens. The Yankees, at that time, were still no good, but they were certainly more interesting, and my allegiance shifted all on its own. I wish only the best for the Mets--except when they play the Yankees--and for all their self-respecting fans.
By the way, I very seldom listen to WFAN or any other talk radio. I find most of the callers to be less fans and more idiots. But when I do listen, yes, I do hear Yankees 'fans' saying ridiculous things. I also hear Mets fans calling for Piazza to be strung up, or Braden Looper to be stoned, or some such. All those 'fans' are idiots and the Yankees certainly don't have a monopoly there.
