Trick for Trick (1933)
Directed by Hamilton MacFadden
Featuring Ralph Morgan, Victor Jory, Sally Blane
Listed in: Creature Features Movie Guide Strikes Again by John Stanley
Fantastic Content: Magicians, seances, spooky old mansions.
Commentary: One of my sources says this movie is Lost. Another claims to have seen it some 24 years ago at Grauman's Chinese theater and describes it in such a way that makes it sound like an early version of Corman's THE RAVEN, with battling magicians and great special effects. The other descriptions make it sound more like your usual "Old Dark House" movie, with the novelty that many of the characters are magicians. I'd have to see it for myself to know for sure, but I can't find it. But is it lost? I don't know, so I'm classifying it as Unknown for the time being.
TRICK FOR TRICK is not lost at all. MoMA has a beautiful 35mm print, which has been making the rounds at festivals over the past 5 years. Quite an enjoyable film, with first-rate special effects and art direction, both very much in the same vein as CHANDU THE MAGICIAN. Unfortunately, the plot is negligible.
