The other descriptions make it sound more like your usual "Old Dark House" movie, with the novelty that many of the characters are magicians. I'd have to see it for myself to know for sure, but I can't find it. But is it lost? I don't know, so I'm classifying it as Unknown for the time being. TRICK FOR TRICK is not lost at all. MoMA has a beautiful 35mm print, which has been making the rounds at festivals over the past 5 years. Quite an enjoyable film, with first-rate special effects and art direction, both very much in the same vein as CHANDU THE MAGICIAN. Unfortunately, the plot is negligible.

Bluebeard (1951) aka Blaubart Directed by Christian-Jaque Featuring Hans Albers, Cecile Aubry, Fritz Kortner Listed in: Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Film and Television Credits by Harris M. Lentz III Fantastic Content: Serial killer... maybe. Commentary: I could probably have quickly disposed of the research on this one by just assuming it was another straight take on the Bluebeard story. I'm glad I didn't; in truth, it appears to be a spoof of the Bluebeard legend, and one plot description I found made me hesitant enough about the serial killer content to add the ...maybe on the end. It's also something I thought didn't happen anymore; it's apparently an alternate language version (German) of the director's BARBE-BLUE (French), which is something that happened mostly during the early thirties. The other version has some votes on IMDB, but this one doesn't. I have no idea if it exists, so I'm classifying it as Unknown. I assume the plot is similar to that of the Charles Laughton movie, though since it's running time is only fifteen minutes, It's probably pretty abbreviated. I'm classifying it as Unknown. According to Silent Era, prints do exist, but they stop short of saying that the serial is complete and only mention that which episodes still exist is unknown. (11/10/09 4:11 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	BLUEBEARD (1951/Blaubart) still exists in 35mm at the Deutsches Film-Institut, and had a very limited VHS (PAL) release in 1995; I've never seen it, but it seems like the kind of title which could pop up on DVD in Germany at any time. CAGLIOSTRO (1920) is lost, sadly. Also, one update on an older 'hunt' entry: COUNTRY WITHOUT STARS (1946) has recently been made available as a French-language Region 2 PAL DVD: link on Amazon.fr

Death Travels Too Much (1965) aka Umorismo in nero Directed by Claude Autant-Lara, Jose Maria Forque and Giancarlo Zagni Featuring Sylvie, Pierre Brasseur, Jean Richard Listed in: Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Film and Television Credits by Harris M. Lentz III Fantastic Content: Death appears in the last episode. Commentary: Information about the movie is quite sketchy. All I know is that it presents three stories by three different directors (one French, one Spanish and one Italian), and the last episode features the character of death. It has no votes listed on IMDB, and I haven't been able to find a plot description anywhere. My guess is that if this one exists, it hasn't been seen in ages. I'm classifying it as Unknown. Commentary: Or is it cursed? In the story, a woman finds a cursed emeral that belonged to a Viking Queen. A schemer marries her to get the jewel and then, once he has it, tries to frame the woman for adultery so he can divorce her. Complication ensue; the woman kills her husband... but I don't want to give it all away, do I? Still, if this is a curse, it's a pretty mundane one; I'd say it sounds more like soap opera than horror. Commentary: If I could pick any one fantastic theme that just seemed to scream "lost silent movie", it would be the manufacture of diamonds; it pops up in silent movies all the time, but hardly in any of them I can find. This serial uses it in the typical Gizmo Maguffin fashion, based on the plot description I found; villains want he formula, so we get chases, rescues, etc. Silent Era says it's lost, so I'm classifying it as such.
