Burgomaster

If the material is noted as being copyrighted, you should at least include the copyright notice with the post. Removing it is the worst thing you can do because it leaves the writing unprotected from someone who might decide to use it in a book or article, etc. not knowing that it is copyrighted material.

Fantastic Content: Voodoo

Commentary: I don't have a whole lot of info on this one. The plot involves high priestess placing a voodoo curse on an explorer. It was the sole directorial effort of F. Herrick Herrick, who did a smattering of acting roles in other movies. One thing that does seem certain; the movie is considered Lost, and that's how I'll classify it.

Fantastic Content: The plot eventually involves witchcraft and a rampaging gorilla.

Commentary: Now this is one I'd really love to see. I think it's an all-black cast movie with Mantan Moreland in a leading role. It's mostly a comedy involving detectives, and, from a look at the character names, "Creeps" is a character name and not a verb. I haven't heard anything about its possible existence, but I know I can't find it and I haven't heard about anyone else seeing it either. For the moment, I'm classifying it as Unknown, though the Lost classification is rather tempting.

Fantastic Content: Slight fantasy elements having to do with the nature of the treasure.

Commentary: This is one of those serials-edited-into-features that I've seen too many of, and I suspect this one (which is edited from DANGERS OF THE CANADIAN MOUNTED) will be no better than some of the others I've seen. The serial itself is none too good, so I wouldn't expect too much from this, even if I could find it. I suspect that it does exist out there somewhere, so I'm classifying it as Hard-to-Find.

Commentary: This is a German update of the "Hamlet" story, and if you're familiar with that, you know that the fantastic content involves a visit of a ghost of a murdered man to his son. As of this writing, there are 37 votes for this movie on IMDB, so I'm pretty confident it exists, but I've been unable to find a copy. I'm classifying it as Hard-to-Find.

Fantastic Content: A woman has the ability to stop all machinery if she's in the vicinity for fifteen minutes.

Commentary: I thought I had this one cornered at one time, as it was originally slated to be available on an import of a Kenneth More collection. However, the title was dropped from the collection, but I have reason to believe that it's still extant and can be found... if I only knew where to look. I'm classifying this one as Hard-to-Find.

OBEAH was Herrick's only feature, but he'd made several shorts as well, including a series of two-reel 'dramatized documentaries' under the series title 'Fragments of Life' in 1925/26, and a series of travelogs under the collective title 'Vagabond Adventures' for RKO/Van Beuren in 1933/34. He was also one of the producers of Universal's Goofytone Newsreels, and was the credited director of Newsreel #7 in the series (misidentified as 'F. Hetrick' at the IMDb). His last known directorial credit was for NORWAY REPLIES! (1944), a wartime propaganda short made for the Royal Norwegian Information Service.

Although Turner and Price were unable to turn up a print or much evidence of a release of OBEAH for FORGOTTEN HORRORS, the film did play as MYSTERY SHIP in Britain and British Commonwealth nations. I've been told that Herrick's grandson, the current custodian of Herrick's papers, illustrations, correspondence, etc., apparently owns an original print/negative of OBEAH, although I haven't been able to confirm this first-hand.

I've been told in the past that there are prints in the hands of private collectors, something which Jack Theakston seems to confirm in this post from earlier this year: link.

As for THE REST IS SILENCE (1959), it indeed definitely exists, although I've never seen it. It may be of some additional interest, since director Käutner originally wanted to shoot the film in the United States rather than in Germany, but was unable to get Universal interested in the project.

Note: The plot for this film was taken from FD , the only review found for the film. Phillips H. Lord was best known for his portrayal of "Seth Parker" on the radio, and the character name was also the name of his yacht. The character, "Seth Parker," was a fictional New England philosopher. The first film in which Lord appeared as "Parker" was Way Back Home (see below). According to an ad in the 1935 FDYB filming took place during the first part of an around-the-world cruise, and took place over an eleven month period and covered "twenty countries, 18,000 miles, and 6,000 people." According to the FD review, natives and the schooner's crew appeared in the film as cast members.

The film's original title was Goodbye Mr. Creeps . In the file on the film contained in the MPAA/PCA Collection at the AMPAS Library, a 21 Jan 1942 telegram sent to PCA official Geoffrey Shurlock, PCA official Carl E. Milliken expressed concern over the film's title, stating that travesties on "important titles" must be approved by the producer concerned, in this case M-G-M, which made the film Goodbye Mr. Chips . Shurlock responded that because the film was an "all-Negro" production destined only for Negro theaters, it seemed unlikely that it would conflict with the M-G-M film. No additional correspondence was found, and although the film was indeed released under another title, it is not clear whether the conflict with Goodbye Mr. Chips was responsible for the change. Despite Shurlock's prediction, Professor Creeps was previewed to a racially mixed audience at Los Angeles' Lincoln Theatre, located on Central Avenue, according to a NYT item. The HR reviewer commented that the Hollywood reviewers who attended the preview on Central Avenue "in the heart of the colored district were treated to a new experience when they sat in a yelling, screaming audience that unrestrainedly relished every moment of the film." The critic for the Pittsburgh Courier stated, "even the heretofore...'Anti' all-Negro picture critics, including your correspondent, who came to slash and lambast the 'Professor,' were lost in the...mirth of the youngsters." Contemporary reviews praised the film's "medicine show" and "minstrel show era" humor, a type of entertainment that, according to FD , the film's producers were trying to introduce "to the screens of formerly restricted theaters." Reviewers almost unanimously proclaimed the film's marketability to white as well as African American audiences, and urged exhibitors to take a chance with the film at their white-patronage theaters. Somewhere along the line, I saw THE REST IS SILENCE (and liked it), probably in Eugene, Oregon, in the early 1960s.

Interesting to see that Tom has revised his earlier claim that TCM held copyright on these synopses (emphasis added):

Wouldn't it be better just to post links to the TCM website where these synopses appear? I don't think we're supposed to be taking thousands of words of their copyrighted stuff.

Also interesting to remember that when I sent him lots of these synopses, he did not request that I add the copyright notice.

I saw STOP PRESS GIRL on TV at least twice back around 1960 or so, but nary a whisper of it since. As a ten-year-old, I rather enjoyed it, for whatever little that's worth.

Fantastic Content: Formula makes cars and boats move with super-speed

Commentary: The plot descriptions all make it sound like the usual "Gizmo Maguffin" plot - scientist creates device and people try to get it from him. Some of the plot descriptions I've read are so glowing that I suspect that they were copied from some pressbook somewhere; my own suspicion is that this one would turn out rather lame. One thing is for sure; it's rarely seen (there are no votes on IMDB) and I haven't been able to find it. Does it still exist? I don't know, but I'm placing it in the Unknown category.

Fantastic Content: Magicians, seances, spooky old mansions.

Commentary: One of my sources says this movie is Lost. Another claims to have seen it some 24 years ago at Grauman's Chinese theater and describes it in such a way that makes it sound like an early version of Corman's THE RAVEN, with battling magicians and great special effects. The other descriptions make it sound more like your usual "Old Dark House" movie, with the novelty that many of the characters are magicians. I'd have to see it for myself to know for sure, but I can't find it. But is it lost? I don't know, so I'm classifying it as Unknown for the time being.

When he visits Azrah, whom he knew years before on Coney Island, the magician is conducting a séance for Mr. Russell and his daughter Constance. When Constance's fiancé, David Adams, arrives at Azrah's house, Azrah's partner, Albert Young, will not let him in, so David enters through an open window. When he finds Azrah, David says that he suspects him of killing Evelyn and produces an envelope containing cancelled checks from Azrah to Evelyn. With the help of his trick electrician, Metzger, Azrah creates an illusion that keeps David from confronting him any further. Young comes in and picks a fight with David, so that he can steal the cancelled checks. Jed then enters, but before he can question Azrah, La Tour, whom Evelyn had assisted prior to Azrah, arrives. At the séance, after the guests are forced to relinquish their weapons, Azrah is tied to his chair to ensure that he does not leave when the lights go down. After the lights flash on and off, La Tour is found dead in Azrah's chair with a penknife through his heart. The knife belongs to Evelyn's father, who is disguised as a guest, Professor King. Azrah asks to continue with the séance and, with the help of his assistant Maisie Henry, tricks everyone with an illusion, using sound recordings of a conversation he had with Evelyn before her death. In the recordings, she confides that La Tour, who would not marry her, left her pregnant and penniless, and that she was then unable to return to her family. Evelyn's father, who was trying to kill Azrah because he thought that he was responsible for Evelyn's death, confesses to La Tour's murder, and he is arrested. Fantastic Content: Woman lures men to their deaths?

Commentary: If the fantastic content listed above is vague, that's because what info I've found is vague indeed. It seems to be the product of three countries, the USA, Brazil, and West Germany. The plot involves a woman who may be an Amazon who lures men to their deaths. Still, I didn't find the movie listed in the Lee or Willis guides, All-movie.com lists two separate movies by that title, both from 1962, I've seen hints that it was out on DVD and/or VHS, and maybe it is. Still, there are no votes for it on IMDB, so the movie is a bit of a question mark to me. For the moment, I'm classifying it as Hard-to-Find.

Commentary: There's two things I know about this French movie. The first is that a Martian comes to Earth to learn about "love". The second is that the lead actor mainly does an imitation of Jerry Lewis. I immediately noticed a certain resemblance to VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET, and I'm not the only one; one of the plot descriptions I found also made the same connection. Is it any good? Hard to tell without seeing it. I'm classifying it as Hard-to-Find.

Fantastic Content: Alien from outer space possesses body of dead man

Commentary: This Italian science fiction comedy has 25 votes on IMDB, which makes me suspect that it still exists. However, the two user comments are extremely vague about plot details,so it may not have been seen in recent viewings. The plot descriptions vary a little, but it seems that the alien possesses the dead body, takes over the job of the dead person, learns to do it with super speed, and falls in love. One plot descripton mentions an invasion, but that may be an assumption on someone's part. In some ways, it sounds a little similar to A MARTIAN IN PARIS. I haven't been able to find it, so I'm classifying it as Hard-to-Find.
