Another says that there is a story within a story where a woman in entombed alive. Commentary: Here's another movie with a handful of votes on IMDB. I've also been told that the movie is lost. One I have been searching for as well....I have lucked into finding several of the Bollywood Sinbad and Alladin films of the 1950s and 60s...but alas, this one remains hidden. But those that I have found are great fun!

Commentary: I know this one exists; I've had a report that it was recently screened at Cinefest in Syracuse, New York. Given the fact that it doesn't have enough votes to have a rating on IMDB (you need at least five), I'm guessing that this one is hard to find, and I'm classifying it as such. It was a sequel to a Bulldog Drummond movie from 1922, and it was remade as BULLDOG DRUMMOND'S PERIL from 1938, one of the few Bulldog Drummond movies from the thirties I haven't seen yet. ***************** "A maniac with a lot of knowledge is a threat!"

This version, "Le diable en bouteille", also stars Käthe von Nagy ("Kate de Nagy" in France), but Brigitte Horney is replaced by Gina Manès, Albin Skode by Pierre Blanchar, Karl Hellmer by Paul Azaïs, Aribert Wäscher by Gabriel Gabrio, etc. I don't know if "Liebe, Tod und Teufel" is an elusive movie, but its French counterpart is probably, as I never saw it anywhere, neither in theaters nor on TV. Both versions have the same technical credits, such as Fritz Arno Wagner (dir. of photog.), Otto Hunte & Willy Schiller (art directors), Theo Mackeben (music), Kurt Heuser, Jozef Pelz von Felinau, Liselotte Gravenstein (scenario - with the addition of Serge Veber as "adaptator & French dialogue" for the French-language version). Both versions were filmed at Babelsberg Studios in October / November, 1934.

LIEBE, TOD UND TEUFEL was screened as part of Cinegraph's 9th International Film Historical Conference in Hamburg in 1996, and subsequently showed up on Bavarian TV station BR3, although it hasn't been repeated in recent years. The movie is little-remembered today; however, one of Brigitte Horney's songs from the movie, "So oder so ist das Leben", has become an evergreen that appears on various CD compilations from the 1930s. It was subsequently re-recorded by Hildegard Knef in two different arrangements - the first in 1963, and the second in 1976 - and became Knef's absolute 'theme tune' as a singer. I've never seen any evidence of the French version LE DIABLE EN BOUTEILLE existing either; however, the French version of the main song, "Moi je n'dois rien à personne" sung by Gina Manès, is included on the two-CD set Ciné Stars: Paris - Berlin - Hollywood 1929-1939 [link].

It's devilishly clever and ironic, and Stevenson makes you care a great deal about the main characters. I'm assuming Sessue Hayakawa played the Hawaiian protagonist Keawe. Maybe in the remake he could be played by Keanu.

One of the rarest must be "L'étrange fiancée", directed by Georges Pallu in 1930. It was based on Edgar Allan Poe's "The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Feather", and I found only some (negative) reviews in old movie magazines. It was filmed in France, at the Gaumont Sudios in Paris and exteriors in Nice, Saint-Raphaël, Monte-Carlo. A Czech version, "Operené stiny", was filmed at the same time by Leo Marten (who also supervised the French-language version). Henri Baudin played in both versions. The Czech Film Archives still have a 35mm print of their version... The same year, Marie-Louise Iribe directed "Le roi des aulnes", and a German-language version called "Der Erikönig", co-directed with Dr. Peter Paul Brauer. Joe Hamman, Otto Gebühr, Rosa Bertens, and little Raymond Lapon apparently appeared in both versions. What became of all these movies ? A thing is certain, some of them were made available in 9.5mm print, complete. Many years ago, in 1963, a friend of mine found at the Flea Market in Saint-Ouen, suburb of Paris, two 9.5mm prints, with magnetic sound, one was "L'or" (the French version of "Gold"), the other "IF1 ne répond plus" (the French version of "FP1 antwortet nicht"). I had the privilege to watch both movies in his house. This friend died in 1970 and I never heard from the prints, until the beginning of 2007, when I met the guy who acquired them 37 years ago. Alas - he sold them in recent years, to a German (!) collector. And he didn't have the idea to make a copy on DVD-R.

Lentz III Fantastic content: The plot description from AFI (and thanks to Bill Waren for supplying it to me) is a bit vague on the fantastic content, but other sources say that the necklace that figures into the plot actually has a curse on it. Also, given that the movie was directed by Paul Leni, who also gave us THE CAT AND THE CANARY and THE MAN WHO LAUGHS, the possibility of some horror atmosphere is very likely. Commentary: This is an early Charlie Chan film; he's played by a Japanese actor named Sojin. Though Chan is not Japanese, at least they're a bit closer than they would be when they cast a Swede in the part. Commentary: It features a character named Stuttering Slim and an actor named Silver Streak playing himself. Since the plot also involves a heroic dog, I'm guessing Silver Streak is not human. LA CITÉ FOUDROYÉE definitely exists, and has played at various film festivals in France in the past two or three years. It was also included in the Cinémathèque Française's "Disaster Movies" season in 2006.
