May 23 07 5:34 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	When I began the movie-watching project, I decided I was going to compile a hunt list which I would limit to a thousand movies. I would watch one different movie every day from this list until I reached the day where I had a thousand movies, none of which I had available for watching. After six years and two months, I have finally reached that point. I will not be watching a new movie today for that reason. So, in order to make room on my hunt list for new additions, I've started this thread. For every day I have no movie to watch, I will enter the five movies from my list that have been on it the longest but have remained unseen to these eyes. For each movie, I will tell a little bit about it, offer some speculation as to whether it might be a lost movie or not. I will try to classify each movie as either LOST, HARD-TO-FIND, or to any other classification that seems appropriate. Please take note that the status I put down is only speculation on my part. If anyone else out there can further elucidate a movie's status, please do so. And if anyone knows where I can find one of these movies, please drop me an email; I would love to remove it from this list. NOTE: This does not mean that I won't be posting Movies of the Day; as it is, I have a good five-month backlog that should tide me over. The next message of this thread will be a complete alphabetical summary of the movies I cover throughout the thread. Each movie will be given its own message as well. This is an early adaptation of Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Commentary: Theda Bara was a stage name, an anagram of "Arab Death". She specialized in vamp roles - women who drain the sexual energies of men and makes them her slaves. Somehow, I don't see the Esmeralda role in that light, so I'm really curious as to what sort of changes were made in this adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel. Commentary: You know, when you take the Ritz Brothers out of the 1939 version of this movie, it's actually pretty good. Granted, it would have also been better if they Ritzes had been given decent comic dialogue. At any rate, it would have been interesting to see how this movie would hold up in other versions, and there are at least two others out there that predate the 1939 movie. Commentary: NOSFERATU was an unauthorized version of "Dracula", and because of copyright infringement, an attempt was made to destroy all copies of the movie. Yet, somehow, it managed to survive to this day. THE HEAD OF JANUS was also an unauthorized version of a novel, in this case "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". As far as I know, it didn't garner the same reaction as NOSFERATU, and no attempt was made to destroy all copies of it. Yet this one is now a lost film. There's a lesson here, but I don't know what it is. May 27 07 3:50 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	About Rupert Julian's "The Cat Creeps" (1930), you can also add that the Spanish-language version, directed by George Melford, "El gato" (aka "La voluntad del muerto") is apparently lost as well. It starred Antonio Moreno, Lupita Tovar, Manuel Granado, Andrès de Segurola, and Pablo Alvarez Rubio. "Voyage autour d'une étoile" was presented by Serge Bromberg some months ago in two different versions - according to him, both were made by the same director, Gaston Velle, and the same year (1906) - but I didn't understood the reason for making two versions, really. If Bromberg is right, one was made for public audience, and the other for private collectors of movies. Each version has it own casting, and the sets are different.

All the women begin to fight over him. Hilarity ensues (I assume). Commentary: I don't know if this one exists or not, and the fact that it has 13 votes on IMDB and user comments by F. Gwynplaine MacIntyre doesn't really convince me. After all, voters may have confused it with the 1964 Vincent Price movie. If this seems unlikely, bear in mind that I have one of those low-budget public domain collections of science fiction movies in my collection that has that later movie, but the plot description on the blurb matches that of this 1924 movie, which just goes to show that sometimes people don't pay attention. At any rate, hunting for this one is complicated by the fact that the Price movie exists and is, to most people's mind, the only movie that exists by that name.
