I've been watching a lot of classic horror lately and just seemed to notice how much the vampire is more prominantly featured in many eras of the horror film than those dealing with lycanthropy. I began to think of my favorite films dealing with the subject and would like to see what other posters on here choose for their favorites. My personal picks include: THE WOLF MAN(1941), CRY OF THE WEREWOLF(1944), THE WEREWOLF(1956), CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF(1961), WEREWOLF SHADOW(1972), WEREWOLF WOMAN(1975), THE HOWLING(1981),WOLF(1994), GINGER SNAPS(2000) and UNDERWORLD(2003).

WEREWOLF OF LONDON,allthe Chaney/Universals,CRY OF THE WEREWOLF,SHE-WOLF OF LONDON,THE WEREWOLF(1956),THE HOWLING.I may be srectching it,but I like Matt Willis in RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE.I havent seen too many of the newer ones, and yes..i like SHE-WOLF,its not great, but its got some kind of atmosphere to it,There is a certain amount of tension at the end,well..its fun,in a hokey kind of way.Im glad that someone put CRY OF THE WEREWOLF on their list, its really better than SHE-WOLF,an underrated film that should be seen more often.Oh wait ....I forgot another...THE UNDYING MONSTER...talk about atmosphere...

I think CRY OF THE WEREWOLF is a much better film than SHE-WOLF OF LONDON as well, the cast is more believable and the atmosphere is great! I'm not too big on THE UNDYING MONSTER, there are moments where you can see clearly that the script "borrows" from THE WOLF MAN. FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN has some of the best werewolf stuff ever in a horror film, it's only shadowed by sharing the limelight with the Monster that keeps it from being "the" all-time werewolf classic( although it is classic in it's own right!)Even though it is far from being a masterpiece, I have come to like CURSED(2005) for a modern werewolf film. I know that this film originally had a different cast and Wes Craven was far from pleased with the final product, however, it still has some moments.

Although werewolves don't rate all that high on my favorite monsters list, I'm awfully partial to the following films:
THE WOLF MAN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON DOG SOLDIERS GINGER SNAPS THE HOWLING While I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Hammer fan, I hate to say it, CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF just doesn't do much for me even though the make-up is the best of them all! |

Quote: Yeah, I agree. I was pretty disappointed when I finally got to see COTW for the first time...how could such a great looking werewolf be in such a...just ok movie. As far as best looking werewolf, I would rank Oliver Reed's right below Chaney Jr.'s...but it's close. Best looking werewolves: 1. Chaney Jr. - Wolfman 2. Oliver Reed - COtW 3. Michael Landon - IWaTW My fave werewolf flicks: Wolfman Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman The Howling Werewolf of London I Was a Teenage Werewolf |

Quote: Not close for me, I'd put Reed in Ashton's make-up well above Chaney Jr in Pierce's make-up. A werewolf should look ferocious as far as I'm concerned and the Chaney Jr. Wolf Man has just never struck me that way. Hell, I find the make up on David Rintoul in Tyburn's THE LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF superior to Chaney Jr as well, for the same reason. |

Re: Favorite werewolf films | ||

I'm trying to get through Wes Craven's CURSED currently - if I get back to it tonight, it will be the third installment, and hopefully the last. Oy vey, what a mess. I have trouble believing that Craven, hit-or-miss as he can be, was behind this turd (altho I'm aware that there was a lot of post-production tampering). The CGI werewolf effects are so lousy that they look like they belong in a storyboard, not a finished film.

The Dr. Acula approved list:
The Howling The Howling II The Beast Must Die Curse of the Werewolf (Hammer) The Wolfman Frankenstein Vs. Wolfman Ginger Snaps Brotherhood of the Wolf (if that counts) EDIT to add The Company of Wolves - the Angela Carter tales are worth digging up too, but the film is better IMHO!
