Because they're able to use monsters as allegories for these fears, horror films can touch on dangerous issues in a way that standard dramas can't or won't. If you're a social outsider either by choice or default, monsters end up becoming very attractive because they want things they aren't allowed to have. In order to get them, they don't mind making a mess out of those "normals" who stand in their way. Tell me where the Blood Red River runs/ From my back door to the rising sun/ On again away till dawn/ Never straight and way too long

Jul 29 06 2:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In my case I think it is because monsters and classic horror remind me of my childhood. I lot interest in monsters during my teens only to rediscover them again in my mid 30's. Started buying FM again on Ebay and decorating my office with a classic horror theme. Horror movies were always my favorite genre all through the years, but I really got back into the classics that I loved as a child about five years ago.

Aug 1 06 6:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The social outsider/outcast theme resonates quite a lot with me. Particularly with Frankenstein's creation you feel that he is misunderstood and does not want to look like how he does. I think every ugly or fat kid that ever lived can find some empathy there. I suppose that makes us all losers, but united in our 'difference' from the rest of the pack.

It helps that our favorite actors who represent this genra took the work seriously. They brought forth an element of problem solving that only be found in movies like War, Westerns, and Crime films.

In horror movies, people come back from the dead, the dead transform into vampires and other demonic or alien creatures, and living characters are frightened because they might be murdered by a monster or madman at any time. I think that's at the core of its fascination. We don't like to think about death in a direct way, but horror movies make it fun . . . at least for some of us. Some people are born with the horror loving gene, and some aren't. I've known people from all sides of the social and political spectrum who love it, and those who just don't care for it. When I was a kid, a lot of adults put horror movies down, thinking too much of it was a morbid obsession, or just plain silly. I don't know if today's monsterkids face that kind of mild repression today, but forty or fifty years ago a lot of hard headed adults thought of it as an inferior and possibly even dangerous form of entertainment.

I can transfer my fears/stress/anxiety from real life into fear/anxiety I'm feeling for something on screen and it helps me relax. For example, I watched Suspiria the other night. During the movie and for the rest of the evening, I forgot all about my in-laws who have been driving me insane and upcoming projects at work. I felt so much better the next day! Also, I was raised to be a monster kid by my dad and my uncle and I have a lot of happy memories of watching all kinds of horror and sci-fi with my parents every evening after dinner.

Aug 24 06 3:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Brings back memories as a young kid watching Frankenstein on tv or flipping over and over throught the pages of my "Great Monsters of The Movies" book when I was 7. It is also an escape, forget the world around you for an hour and a half. I used to be into the gore films when I was in my teens, then I went total Eurohorror in my 20's and now in my mid 30's Im all about the classic stuff. I think this is where I will stay.

No horror film (well ... no is a broad statement, but it's close to the mark) is a profound as they questions they posit, but they are pretty entertaining nonetheless.

Triggered by a lunchroom Bully that performed daily rituals of giving wedgies and taking the child's milk money thus forcing him to sniff the dry content of his flavor-straws. A famed doctor confided in me that the root beer flavored straw can be deadly (can't say no more without breaking a trust). I must state that I have experienced the humiliation in my childhood. With one exception, in my situation, it involved Fizz knecks instead of the previously mention flavor-straw. With professional help and therapy, I have moved on to my last and dare I say it, most dangerous fear...... SONNY BOY, the Devil's elixir.
