Now, here's a chance to list your personal favorites. They don't necessarily have to be rare or seriously overlooked films. Just select three that you really enjoy and wish more people would look for. Maybe you'll convince us to go hunt them down. I'll start the ball rolling. CURSE OF THE DEMON (AKA NIGHT OF THE DEMON) (1957) - My favorite horror film of the '50's. The demon scenes still pack a wallop. THE OTHER (1972) - A tremendously atmospheric and creepy little gem. From the director of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD! THE DEAD ZONE (1983) - Before he became The Wizard of Odd, Christopher Walken gave his finest performance in this David Cronenberg chiller. Your turn...

BUT...the three that immediately leap to my mind are... "J'Accuse" ( "I Accuse" ) (1937) Abel Gance's French anti-war fantasy/drama that is one of the most powerful statements made against the "horrors of war", that is also one of the most most criminally underappreciated and unseen films of the era. "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (2001) The first installment of Park Chan Wook's now (in)famous "Vengeance" trilogy is a sobering exercise in the darkside of human nature, ruthlessly executed, poignantly acted and magnificently shot, and unfortunately, overshadowed by the second installment, "Oldboy". "The Devil's Rejects" (2005) Rob Zombie's incredible sequel to his mediocre B-horror "House of 1000 Corpses" is a "love letter" to the grindhouse/exploitation cult films of the seventies that it pays homage to. Oh well, here goes: 1) Curse Of The Demon (Night Of The Demon) - I have to agree with Doc on this one. I ALWAYS recommend this 1957 film to friends as it's always struck me as the perfect little film. I didn't see it for the first time until I was in my 30's and I was blown away. 2) Kenny & Co (1976) - Director Don Coscarelli's second film (after Jim, The World's Greatest and before Phantasm) about three young boys living life in the days leading up to and including Halloween. No other film I've ever seen so perfectly captures what it was like to be 11 years old in the 70's. A warm, funny, and often touching little film with some great Halloween hijinks. 3) Portrait Of Jennie (1948) - A romantic and haunting ghost story about a down-on-his-luck artist (Joseph Cotton) who has lost his muse. That is until he meets a mysterious young girl (Jennifer Jones) in Central Park. A film that has haunted me since first seeing it.

NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955). Not obscure, but this Grimm's fairy tale on the Ohio shows much tender loving care by those who made it. Any number of memorable set pieces.

I've also been trying to get friends and family to watch Lemora, A Child's Tale of the Supernatural. Perhaps my single favorite movie of all time. So far, those who've watched it have been totally taken in by it and love it. Another nostalgic favorite (despite the horrendous acting) that I try to get friends to watch is The Dark (1979) with Richard Jaeckal, Keenan Wynn, Cathy Lee Crosby, and William Devane. It's always fun watching them wince through Jaeckal's stiff scene chewing. :-)

(11/15/06 10:52 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I'm going to choose three films that have been undeservedly eclipsed by more modern fare in recent years: Thief of Bagdad (1940)--Forget Aladdin! This gorgeous Powell and Pressburger film is the best version of an Arabian Nights story, and one of the best fantasy films ever made. La Belle et La Bete (1946)--Forget Beauty and the Beast! The Jean Cocteau version of the old French fairy tale is pure romantic surrealism, surreal romanticism, whatever you want to call it, it's simply beautiful. Shadow of a Doubt (1943)--Forget Psycho! Alright, don't. But give this other Hitchcock film about a sicko woman killer a try. Think Psycho meets Our Town, or the most intense Nancy Drew mystery ever.

I will wholeheartedly agree with "Shadow of a Doubt", which is my personal favorite of Hitchcock's films (with "Psycho" running a close second), and one of the BEST "psycho" films ever made, despite the fact that there is no overt onscreen mayhem. Joseph Cotton's performance is superb, seamlessly portraying warm cordiality and icy menace throughout. Bryan

FAUST (1926) Not as famous as Murnau's NOSFERATU, but this silent has some stunning and horrific visuals. SIX HOURS TO LIVE (1932) Early science fiction that comes across like an early mix of THE WALKING DEAD and D.O.A NON-STOP NEW YORK (1937) Not only does this make for an exciting faux Hitchcock movie, but it's last half is science fiction as well. ***************** "A maniac with a lot of knowledge is a threat!"

A strangely underappreciated film that Stephen King himself described as an improvement on his own work. Walken's performance is so strong, so haunting...even Siskel and Ebert felt it should have received an Oscar nomination. Not to mention Herbert Lom, Anthony Zerbe and Martin Sheen in pivotal roles and a terrific score. A real class act. Next, THE STEPFATHER. Still not available on DVD, it features an unforgetable turn by Terry O'Quinn as the psycho with a perfect family fixation. Maybe now that O'Quinn has found mainstream recognition as John Locke on LOST, we'll see this little gem get a release. The sequels are not in the same league. Lastly, PERDITA DURANGO. Alex De La Iglesia's brutal but fascinating tale of a dangerous couple in love who set out on the crime spree from straight to hell. Jam-packed with quirky characters, wild flashbacks and guest appearances by James Gandolfini, Don Stroud and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. But the real bright light is Javier Bardem as Romeo De La Rosa, self-proclaimed "scientist" and boogieman, who has a smile like a nile crocodile. Rosie Perez as Perdita also gives one of the best performances of her career. Unfortunately, only the sanitized U.S. version (DANCE WITH THE DEVIL) has been released in Region 1, which cuts out all the intriguing underbelly of the story...and all of Perez's nude shots. (11/17/06 5:31 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I'm pretty sure that these three films are the ones I've shown to friends on the spur of the moment the most. The Funhouse: Just a really interesting movie. The idiot guys get theirs, there's a great drooly monster, the carnies are disgustingly delightful, the final scenes are awesome, and Elizabeth Berridge... wow, Elizabeth Berridge... Cat People: This is the 1980 version with Nastassja Kinski as the greatest two-legged/four-legged star in the history of movies. Malcolm McDowell was great as the brother, and Annette O'Toole pretty much did the impossible. She drew my attention away from Kinski! Bobby Deerfield: This may be the guiltiest pleasure movie I own. I thought Al Pacino couldn't possibly top himself after Serpico, but the relationship between him and Marthe Keller was incredible. Being an auto racing guy, I really enjoyed those scenes, but the angst the man felt when he started to realize something was seriously wrong with her just bled all over the screen. I know, it's sappy. But I loved it and never got complaints from those who watched it with me. Oh, incidentally. Sketchy, you mentioned The Stepfather. I swear, I hated Terry O'Quinn's guts so bad after that movie that I don't think I've seen him in anything since. I never did see any of the sequels. When it came out, my kids were very young, so I guess it wasn't the best time for me to see it. How did your friends react to it?

(11/17/06 6:58 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	My three are quirky little films. Cemetery Man - An Italian import that is not too slice and dice. Odd characters and a memorable score make this one stick in your mind. Donnie Darko - Too bad this was originally released right after 9/11. The story has elements of that tragedy and I think many people avoided it for that reason. The original cut has better music but the director's cut explains more. This one must be seen several times to be appreciated. Slaughterhouse Five - I read a lot of Kurt Vonnegut's work in college so I was ready for the peculiar nature of this film before I saw it. An unusual story about travelling back and forth in time. Nice selection of Bach for the score. I guess the other thing these have in common is the subtle element of comedy.
