Jan 2 07 9:09 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was glancing through some of the older threads and someone raises a very good point. Why did Kharis get three sequels while the Wolf Man had to be featured as a co-monster (grant you the lead in the first) in all the monster team-up movies. Was no serious consideration ever given to a straight sequel?

Jan 2 07 9:45 PM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, you could argue that FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN is pretty much a direct sequel of THE WOLF MAN, and even though he co-stars in the two HOUSE films, the Larry Talbot storyline is pretty consistent (even if he dies and dies again!). In terms of one-man, one-monster, having Lon Chaney Jr. play the same hairy monster in five (!) films, including A&C MEET FRANKENSTEIN, is the all-time Universal record. david

Jan 2 07 9:50 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Wolf Man came about late in the Universal cycle, about the time the studio was beginning to consolidate properties into the "Monster Rally" phase of the two Houses. If it had been made earlier, I bet we'd have seen a "Return of the Wolf Man" or some similarly titled solo sequel.

Jan 2 07 9:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	How about-- there's no story to tell? The first film really had a beginning, middle and end. What do you do with the character afterward? I think the sequels (monster-filled as they are) pretty much do as much as they can with the character. Having a protagonist wanting to die is actually a pretty radical idea... the brain-swap concept of Neumann's, eh... makes sense in the comic book context of that story, I guess, but it would certainly have no logical place in THE WOLF MAN. HOUSE OF DRACULA is a little better, and at least kinda-sorta follows the Lewton-esque ambiguity of the first story. I'm noodling with a script now with "clips" from a forgotten Talbot sequel in which he is cured, but must intentionally will himself back into being a werewolf. What else can one do with the poor boy?

However, the point The Brain Follower first made about Kharis getting three sequels by himself during the same time kinda mutes the point that The Wolf Man just came too late in the horror cycle. Likewise, to answer the question what else could they do with The Wolf Man character; what else could they do with Kharis? The same formula is the answer and they did it. It is strange that they didn't put him into the Monster Extravaganzas and let The Wolf Man pull his own weight. They're all great as they are IMHO, the Houses and the Mummy's, but what could've been?!!

Jan 2 07 11:02 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Perhaps in some parallel Universe where THE WOLFMAN VS DRACULA was made instead of HOF, Universal chose to keep their "modern" monster character going mano el mano against the 30's monsters. Larry Talbot/Wolfman as a sort of an anti-hero. Ted Newsom's idea would fit right into WOLFMAN MEETS DR. JECKYL AND MR. HYDE. www.itcamefromplanetx.com

Here's a character that lives in a huge English manor, is attacked and bitten by a werewolf, was present when his girlfriend's best friend was killed by the beast, turns into a werewolf every time the moon is full, kills indiscriminately, turns to a band of gypsies for help, and ends up getting killed by his own father. You think his whole story was told in 70 minutes??? One of the best sequences in the Universal films are the opening minutes of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man when the grave robbers break into Talbot's tomb. There was plenty of Wolf Man story that could have been told.

Lonster would have made a great post-mummyfied Kharis probably still dragging his dead leg around, fitting a glove over his molded hand ala Rotwang, and maybe wearing an eye patch. Lonster could play the character based off the Karloff Mummy. Straight face and all. "My girls, sir, they didn't care for the Overlook at first. One of them actually stole a packet of matches and tried to burn it down. But I corrected them, sir. And when my wife tried to prevent me from doing my duty I corrected her."

I'll bet they could have done all kinds of neat stuff with that storyline. And, all the time he would be searching for his lost Princess! I think that would have been a great idea! He could have even stepped into the role of the High Priest of Karnak and used the old Tana technology to raise a mummified servant or two of his own!

Was no serious consideration ever given to a straight sequel?<< Probably the rather simple storyline kinda left not much for the Lonster to do. He was finished off as a character with nothing more to tell. The Mummy character was immortal so was pretty much impossible to destroy. I actually like the way Universal handled the Wolfman in their films. You can tell they considered a man into wolf character too weak to continue solo and so some bright boy decided to have a "monster fest", the audiences lapped it up..end of story.

Jan 5 07 7:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember that the first time I ever saw F MEETS W back in the seventies my father warned me that it was "more of a Wolfman movie"(he knew Franky was my favorite monster and didn't want me to be disappointed!). I've always considered it a sequel to THE WOLFMAN. It's continuity with GHOST OF FRANK is kinda loose IMHO(ie, everyone acts Illona Massey's dad was the creator of the Monster, etc.).

It almost works, until late in the film she states that her father and grandfather met a sad fate. (I still figure she could be Wolf's daughter, not seen in SON/F because she was away at school or something.)

Yeah, that line always struck me as something they threw in when they realized that the whole rest of the film seems to identify Illona as the original Dr. Frankenstein's father. Also, Henry escapes death at the end of both FRANK and BRIDE, so I've always wondered what the "horrible death" mentioned in this film(and others) entailed? There must be more to the story than we know!

Someone mentioned a great idea of him going out in search of others with such an affliction. How about this for a story - He actually embraces his doom as being a werewolf and seeks out an enemy to kill. There were much darker sides to the Talbot character than were ever explored in the monster-fests he was left with.
