I just watched the Gordon Hessler directed "Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1971) last night (with Jason Robards, Herbert Lom, and Lilli Palmer), in which a film company production of "Murders" is plagued (to put it mildly) by a "Phantom of the Opera" like antagonist. During the play, the classic "crucifixion" scene is rather faithfully based upon and staged according to the 1932 version. Bryan

Hey Luis! Yeah, the '71 version really just uses the "Rue Morgue" story as a plot device, rather than adapting the story.
I would also like to see "Phantom" finally get released (you just can't get enough of Karl Malden! Bryan

The so-called offensive comedy scene with the neighbors speculating on the language of the murderer is one of the few story points actually in the Poe original. I have no complaints about Universal's 1932 film. It's a harmless, effective hour and features a delicious performance by Lugosi.
