Wow...couldn't believe that CREATURE didn't have a thread devoted just to the movie (REVENGE OF THE CREATURE has two!), although there are several devoted to its' 3-D, masks, etc. If I missed the main one in my search, please forgive me.
I just watched it with my daughter (she's 11) and was very pleased with her reaction. She can't wait to see REVENGE.
I hadn't seen it in awhile myself, and I was very impressed in ways I didn't think I would be. For one thing, the underwater action is much more extensive than I realized. What a pain to film that must have been.
And just thinking about the monster suit makes me happy. It must have been very tempting for them to build a suit that would attempt to hide an aqualung. Would we have accepted a hunchbacked creature? I don't think so.
The acting is uniformly excellent, too. This has to be Richard Denning's best role, and he completely convinces us that he's only interested in one thing -- fame. But Nestor Paiva is the real treasure. How else can you explain how chewing on a rotten cigar stump could look so appealing? My daughter even said, "I like that guy!" We both laughed out loud when he holds the knife to Denning's throat.
The only thing that bothered me this time was how heavy handed the music score was at times (particularly the last fifteen minutes).
Also noticed that they shoot the creature in the back several times, but only once or twice when he faces them. Yet he has four bullet wounds in his chest and head. Good shootin', Tex!
One funny thing (or not so funny, depending on your viewpoint), I told my daughter they were planning to remake it and she immediately said, "Well, I hope they do it in color this time." Oh, well...
