Nov 22 06 9:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Has anyone reading this, ever seen the the Tom Conway film from 1948, entitled- BUNGALOW 13? Being a T.C. fan, I've tried to see all of his films, and collect all the movies/television shows, where he played a detective.

Dec 1 06 12:09 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The brothers played brothers, of course, in the classic THE FALCON'S BROTHER. In 1956, both appeared in DEATH OF A SCOUNDREL, playing, what else, brothers. George's character suffers pretty much the same fate in both.

Jan 29 07 8:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched the Tom Conway film- AUTOMIC SUBMARINE (1959) over the weekend. I enjoyed the commentary with the late Alex Gordon and Tom Weaver. I give high marks to Mr. Weaver's asking about the various character actors and specifically, Tom Conway. However, this is the first time I've heard anyone say that T.C. DID NOT have a drinking problem. I knew of his health problems, mainly his eye trouble. What I think, is, he was an alcoholic, but he didn't let it effect his work on film or television. Since it was very enjoyable listening to A.G. & T.W...are there commentaries of this caliber on the dvd's of- "She Creature" and "Voodoo Woman", in which Tom Conway is also involved?

By the end of the 50s that pretty much put the kibosh on anyone trusting him with substantial acting work. On a fan level, I always liked him. That's why I was so disheartened when I read the wire story in about 1965 about him. It was an AP or UPI feature in the Oregonian (first section, left hand page, top, with a three-inch insert portrait photo of Conway circa 1950... how's that for recall?) Within the story, Conway admitted it was his drinking that brought him as low as he was at that point-- that is, living in poverty in some crappy hovel in Venice... unemployable... utterly estranged fom his brother. The descriptions of his living conditions and his appearance within the text were very sad. He wan't begging for sympathy, though the reporter obviously was not unsympathetic to Conway. So it wasn't gossip or someone telling tales, it was Conway himself. The last film role he had was a one-line, unbilled bit part in WHAT A WAY TO GO, I remember... he still looked dapper in a tux. I believe George Sanders alludes to his brother's behavior in his autobiography, but doesn't get into specifics. Alex Gordon was a nice, sweet man. Maybe he didn't see Conway drinking on SUBMARINE, maybe he just didn't notice it, or maybe Conway really wasn't drinking. But the toll had already been partly-paid by then, and less than seven years later, Conway himself told the world. By that point, there were few of us who cared.

In the case of Tom Conway (from what I've gathered in reading about him and the conversations I've had with those who worked with him), he was an insecure man, who felt his talent took a back seat to his brothers.

But, if that persons family history has alcoholism (like a person, etc...who has Cancer in his/her lineage), then, yes, stay away from that which might start the cycle.

And hudreds of young hopefuls waiting to take your place at less money. No wonder that that causes some actors to take a drink to alleviate the tensions and try to calm thier fears.And drinking in those days was something that was looked on with acceptance, indeed many actors had that personna of the hard drinking two fisted he man only to find that alcohal is like quicksand. Easy to get in very hard to get out. As a fellow who once was had a drinking problem I have an empathy with those actors and actresses who have fallen to the Demon Rum. If you have never been there, you will never know what its like to try and get out, to fight that craving. To fight the urge to make your life only a way to get that next bottle and to see the dissaproaval of those you know, and hear as they mutter drunk. To Tom Conway I can only hope that hes in a better place now and at peace.

SHE CREATURE was released as part of a DVD double feature, paired with THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED, April of last year. I don't believe there has ever been a Region 1 DVD of VOODOO WOMAN, although there might have been a Region 2 release.

Siegel, he mentions a dummy project of V.L.'s, entitled- "The Amorous Ghost." It was to star- Tom Conway, playing the part of Casanova. I say "Dummy Project", because, as it was explained, on page 48- Lewton often managed to get past the opposition of his superiors by writing such screenplays, This way, he got the necessary actors and properties, that he wanted, without really letting the front office know what the film would be about. Lewton's plan, at this point, was to try to breakaway from horror movies.

I forgot to record it. I thought I could maybe purchase it, or (a long shot here), rent it from Netflix. But no cigar! So, I sure hope they show it again sometime.

I think he mentioned his brother once, in that they did a movie together - but that's it..and he references his sister not at all...
