My main inspiration was because I just saw a young Bette Davis in THE PETRIFIED FOREST and enjoyed her in it very much. So -- how accurate was it that Ms. Davis was almost cast in FRANKENSTEIN?

Sep 4 06 2:42 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	All I know of Miss Davis's involvement in Frankenstein is that as a Universal contractee she was for a while considered for the leading female role, like many others, and lost it to Mae Clarke. She had recently worked with director James Whale and Miss Clarke, and a few years later would appear in a film with Colin (Henry Frankenstein) Clive, which I'm sure is wholly coincidental (or else due to a mutual personal fondness between these two performers). But back to your question: I don't think that BD was almost cast in Frankenstein, she was merely was under consideration.

Sep 4 06 2:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember rock star ALICE COOPER once saying in an interview he recalled a scene where the monster was shown picking up Fritz(Frye) and hanging him on the hook, which must have been cut, as all we see in the final version is Clive and Van Sloan opening the door and Fritz hanging there. Is this true?

Of course it could have been managed with some help from wires -- but then I've never heard of this before anyway. Mr. Cooper's questionable memories are more than likely the source for it.

If there had been such a scene,--and I've never even heard of it till now, much less seen it--and it had been cut, it would famous, like the edited and then restored monster-and-little Maria-by-the-lake scene, or the lost spider pit sequence in King Kong.

There's a breif bit in the film where the Monster appears to be holding him up, and/or Fritz is hanging several feet off the ground, and a still that shows the action clearer, but I always saw it as meathook time, not dwarf-on-a-chain. Key word: assumed. There is no hook in the cell set. Wicked childhood imagination.

There is a chain hanging to the left of Henry, while Fritz seems to hang from a rope: So the Monster's reputation for lifting people up still hangs high. About as high as the mannequin subbing here for Dwight Frye.

Jan 26 07 9:43 PM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The other night TCM ran two early Columbia Karloff films back to back; CRIMINAL CODE and GUILTY GENERATION. Watching them it occured to me that if it had not been for both of these films, we may not have the classic image of the Karloff's Frankenstein Monster as we have known it for the past 75 years. CRIMINAL CODE is often cited as the film that first gave James Whale the thought of casting Karloff as the monster. One look at him with his short bangs and padded prison uniform and you can't help but think of the Monster. But watching GUILTY GENERATION, which I had never seen before, I began to suspect that it might have played an indirect role in the look of the Monster too. The story goes that during the FRANKENSTEIN make-up tests, it was Karloff himself who suggested that Jack Pierce add the heavy lids to give the Monster's eyes that half-dead look. In GUILTY GENERATION made earlier that same year, Karloff played a gangster with one physical sign of his violent life-style - an eye that had a paralized lid. I'll bet it was that make-up which gave Karloff the idea to suggest thick the eyelids as the finishing touch to the Monster's classic image.

Actually Eddie Parker failed the screen test for the Dummy as Junior thought he wasn't smart enough for the part. Luckily another Dummy was lying around from the hangin scene and was used as Fritz's stand in!

And I always thought GRAFT was the film where Whale approached Karloff in the commissary... perhaps Whale was influenced by Galloway's look in CODE but approached Boris during the making of GRAFT? One thing's for sure, Kerry -- Karloff in CRIMINAL CODE does consistently make one think of the Monster and it had to have influenced Whale. ---------------------- "It's MORE ... than a hobby!"

Anyway, I know I mentioned this before but when they drag the Monster back into the room when they've knocked him out, Fritz is no longer hanging there and the Monster didn't bring him down because he was too busy fighting with the door to get out. So before The Monster gets out of the room, Fritz is hanging there and after they knock the Monster out with the syringe, and drag him back into the room, Fritz is no longer there. I've rewound and fast forwarded it a few times so I'm sure I'm right.

Feb 1 07 9:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Lenny's line about the monster 'fighting with the door' cracked me up and made me think how funny a gag reel would be if it consisted entirely of 'Frankenbloopers', you know, Karloff stumbling or tripping or falling backwards over a barrel, bumping his head, etc. while in the Frank make-up. That would be SO hilarious, and make him seem more 'human'. Maybe a fart or two...
