Apr 2 07 9:46 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was under the impression that computer DVD-drives were essentially region-free. However, when I attempt to watch a region 3 DVD I get a warning that: 1) I must change the region code of the DVD drive; and 2) I can only change the code four times before it pernamently "locks" in that region code. Is this typical? Any way around it?

Apr 2 07 9:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	That particular counter is set somewhere in the firmware (so I'm told) and it isn't at all easy to reset it, even if you reinstall your o/s or move the drive to another computer. Try this player: an earlier version that I have played all of my non-Region One discs. (Both of 'em.) www.videolan.org/vlc/

Yes, this is quite common and a user has only a certain amount of "changes" they can make before a region is "locked" into the program. DonM provided a link that will suit most people in this instance. I have found ways around this, but unless you are proficient at programming, as you will have to decompile and recode the program (known as reverse engineering) it isn't advised.

This was quite a revelation, as I have been using VLC for years, though not primarily for playing DVDs, without knowing about it. It must be that either 1. it is an undocumented feature of VLC, for the official stance is that VLC will only play all regions from an RPC-1 DVD drive, of which supposedly there are none any more, or 2. the drives in my brand-new Dell computer are actually RPC-1 drives.
