Beck Jackson Beck, voice of Superman intro, dies at 92
NEW YORK (AP) _ ``It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!''
The man who bellowed those words to introduce the ``Superman'' radio show has died. Jackson Beck was 92.
He was a master of the voice-over. Beck used his voice to promote everything from Aqua Fresh toothpaste to Combat roach killer.
In addition to narrating Superman's adventures, Beck doubled as villains, supporting characters and the Daily Planet copy boy on the popular radio broadcasts of the 1940s.
He also portrayed Bluto in more than 300 ``Popeye'' cartoons. He also did voice-over for two Woody Allen movies, ``Radio Days'' and ``Take the Money and Run.'' He worked well into his 80s.
A friend says Beck died yesterday. He had suffered a series of small strokes several years ago.
