Does that sound familiar? Was it an old radio show? Back in the seventies one of my friends taped something off the radio one night and he didn't know the source. It was the story of two cops investigating an isolated old house ("between nothing and nowhere", as one of them put it) and inside they found the body of a man who had been turned inside-out ("Skin on the inside...raw flesh on the outside! His organs just...hanging..."). An old woman who had been driven insane by what she saw cowered in the corner, cackling. And at the end, a strange mist entered the room, enveloped them, and turned them all inside-out as well. The copy I heard was bracketed by Tangerine Dream-type electronic music. Was this taken from "Lights Out" or some other old radio show, or was it just something done in that style later on? I'd really love to find a copy of it.
BTW: just remembered, the Simpsons even spoofed this story at the end of one of their "Treehouse of Horror" Halloween episodes, when a mist entered the room and turned the entire family inside-out.

Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.
