My wife attended a play in the U.K., and had the Playbill signed by Peter O'Toole and Kevin Spacey. Dec 14 06 3:21 AM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Looking at the Internet Broadway Database, I think it's likely to be the signature of John Bohn. He had an okay Broadway career with a few lead roles. There is one other name on the page that likewise doesn't seem to be connected to RITA COVENTRY; I think it's Alfred A(Alexander) Hesse. He too had a decent Broadway career. Maybe they were visiting backstage or an opening night celebration afterward. Wouldn't be surprised if it was opening night, considering that the author of the novel from which the play had been adapted was present. The play ran only 24 performances. EDIT: just noticed the remark that the autographs were collected during a pre-broadway try-out. This makes sense and may explain why Alberni's and Corbet Morris' autographs are missing; perhaps their roles were played by Bohn and Hesse in the try-out. There was a John Boles active on Broadway in '23, but he was a replacement player in LITTLE JESSIE JAMES and that opened five months after RITA COVENTRY closed. It's Boles earliest Broadway credit. (I don't even know if it's the same John Boles with whom we're familiar. Apparently discovered by Gloria Swanson, his first film was released in '24.) The Midnight Marquee Press book on Frye that I mentioned earlier is DWIGHT FRYE'S LAST LAUGH, "An Authorized Biography" by Gregory William Mank, James T. Coughlin, and Dwight D. Frye. Exhaustive info and lots of rare photos and memorabilia from the actor's own scrapbooks, highly recommended for Frye fans, and who among us is not? Among the book's information on the play was this note (Appendix C, Broadway Plays) -- *Quote:* Prior to opening on Broadway, Brock Pemberton gave RITA COVENTRY an out-of-town tryout. RITA COVENTRY played Bristol, Connecticut, on January 30, 1923, and the Beechwood Theater, Scarborough-on-Hudson, February 1-3, 1923. The letterhead seems to pin it down.

Dec 14 06 9:00 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Another autograph from my collection: I got it from Don Glut (who assuredly has other Strange autographs in his collection), along with several other choice items, because I had something to trade that he desperately wanted -- a couple of extremely rare 50's dinosaur figures that he's been looking for since he was a kid and saw them in Marshall Field's window in Chicago! (I found 7 Neoform and Chialu dinos and prehistoric mammals in a local antique mall, bought them for a great lot price, and sold/traded them to three different collectors after a fierce bidding war. Don got the two he wanted most and traded me a wonderful bunch of stuff.) Don, of course, was introduced to Glenn Strange by Bob Burns, and they managed to talk Glenn into appearing in Don's ADVENTURES OF THE SPIRIT amateur film (finally available on DVD) wearing a Don Post Frankenstein mask! Bob Burns told me that he personally designed this great photo for Glenn to sign for fans, and he gave me an untrimmed original to prove it.

Dec 14 06 2:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Two more items I got from Don Glut in the dino trade: Don also traded me an 8x10 FLASH GORDON serial scene signed by "Prince Barin" (Richard Alexander), and a 5x7 portrait of Mr. Spock signed by Leonard Nimoy when Don visited the STAR TREK set during the first year of production. (I had to give that one to my youngest son, who's much more of a Trekky than I am -- but I'd LOVE to be able to get Nimoy to sign a still from ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE for my collection of serial autographs -- If anybody has a suggestion about how I might accomplish that, please let me know!) There were various other goodies thrown into the deal, including some of Glut's fanzines from the 60's, items from the Tom Steele Fan Club he ran, etc. The signed Roy Barcroft portrait as Republic's "Purple Monster" is nearly as satisfying to me as anything in my horror/fantasy/sci-fi collection. When I got tremendously turned on by cliffhangers about 15 years ago, it was still possible to write to many of the major cliffhanger stars from the talkie era, and I got lots of wonderful serial photos signed just by sending them to the actors in postpaid, self-addressed return mailers. Since then I've spent lots of time, effort and even a good bit of money adding to the collection by buying from reputable dealers. Though I have a fairly substantial collection of horror/fantasy genre autographs, including some real rarities, my serial collection is far more complete and comprehensive, including many of the best-known figures associated with sound-era cliffhangers, lots of familiar supporting players, and unusual items like Lloyd Bridges as Secret Agent X-9, Ken Curtis as Don Daredevil, Harry Worth as The Scorpion in CAPTAIN MARVEL (inscribed to Alex Gordon back in the 50's), Tom Tyler (signed cowboy portrait from his early 30's circus appearances), I. Stanford Jolley as The Crimson Ghost, Mae Clarke in KING OF THE ROCKETMEN, and "Brother" Theodore Gottlieb in a scene from THE BLACK WIDOW. I hope to find the time and energy to put together an appropriate web gallery for this stuff someday soon.

Try doing a quick sketch to get his attention. Worked for me, back in 1971: Not the greatest sketch ever, but it did the job. He was so taken with it that he signed a bunch of other stuff too: Mr. Spock record albums, Making of Star Trek paperback, some photos. And the cool thing is that he signed 'Spock' too, which I'm not sure he does anymore. Not long after, I think, is when that stash of REPUBLIC posters showed up on the market. I used to stare at the ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE 3 sheet in the comic shop where I was working (Nimoy and Barcroft!). I'll bet he would have signed that too! 'Course it would help if you could look like a 15 year old kid. Give it a try! He sees you....when you're sleeping........

Nice drawing of Spock! -- did you send it to him, or meet him in person? I think it's a great idea to give him a drawing of himself, though he probably gets lots of that sort of thing. Years ago I did a caricature of Spock as a duck that was published in a Byron Preiss paperback overseen by Harvey Kurtzman, but I doubt if that would do the trick... Part of my quandary with Nimoy is how to contact him... is there a reliable mailing address, fan club, talent agency, etc. that would forward mail to him?

Dec 15 06 12:45 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanx George. I'd forgotten that I used to do the sketch/autograph thing until ryanbrennan above mentioned doing the same. Back in '71, I saw a small filler blurb in the paper saying that Nimoy would be doing FIDDLER ON THE ROOF summerstock in Hyannisport (on my birthday). Being on a bit of a TREK trip in those days (the syndicated reruns were still in their first go round) I convinced Mom that she needed a vacation....in Cape Cod, so off we drove. 'Spock' made a GREAT Tevye -- he has much better pipes than his commanding officer. Providentually, small cassette recorders were just being introduced then (shhh......). Backstage (well, outside -- it was the Melody Tent) he was very cordial, and the sketch proved a great ice breaker. We chatted for quite a while, even being interrupted when his kids came over to ask to borrow the car or something. I found that he's very much focused on the 'work' ethic ("Nice piece of work", "When we were doing the work"...), so doing 'work' for him was the way to go. I've read that when he was young his idol Danny Kaye gave him the brush-off, and so he tries not to do that to an honest admirer. I even found a 'bootleg' album of his songs that he was very interested in (but he signed it anyway!). Years later I saw him in EQUUS at the Helen Hayes Theatre (isn't that where Karloff did ARSENIC?), and he was shunning any Spock photos -- that was the week STAR WARS opened in NYC, well before any of the TREK movies and the end of his money dispute with Paramount over licensing -- so I blame that. *Quote:* Years ago I did a caricature of Spock as a duck If it was as good as Barrymore Duck I bet he'd like it. (That was the drawing that inspired me to do Nick Fury as a duck and show it to Steranko -- Duck Fury -- I'll have to dig that out sometime!). As you know, it starts out small (gateway drug) with "hey, nice 1960's reprint Karloff photo and only $5.00?" - Oh yeah... seems easy and harmless, but before you know it you're saying "screw the mortgage.. gotta have that original lobby card" - Just wait till your wife wants a vacation for the 10th wedding anniversary and you're trying to figure out a way to convince her a signed photo of Lugosi would be so much more of a meaningful expression of love. Repeat after us "My name is xxxx, and I'm a collector"

Some of my most treasured are: Vincent Price (as Egghead, my first autograph received when I was about 10 through the mail), Burgess Meredith (Penguin, natch), Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing (Tarkin), Darren McGavin (Kolchak), John Carradine (Universal Drac), Michael Gough, Karen Black...I've also got collections of Dr. Who autographs (Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Anthony Ainley, Kate O'Mara, Jean Marsh, Liz Sladen, etc.) and Batman, both the 60s show (West, Craig, Gorshin, Kitt and Romero, Carney, David Wayne, Newmar, Wallach, etc.) and the animated series (Kevin Conroy, Loren Lester, Efrem Zimbalist, Hamill, Paul Williams, Adrienne Barbeau, David Warner, Richard Moll, Michael Ansara, John Glover, etc.)
