May 15 04 2:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Did anyone happen to order one of those "new" FM vinyl monster wallets that were out a few years ago. Im sure they were pretty much junk, but I have very fond memories of my original. They were made by Standard Plastics of New Jersy and if you look them up now it's a toxic waste area. Hmmm, makes you wonder what was in that vinyl. I remember how great those things smelled when you first got them, nothing like the new horrible smelling pvc plastics are today.LOL I think it was Dracula on one side and Frankenstein on the other, or maybe I had two of them. I also remember a little magic slate board on the inside of the wallet with some "monster'"credit cards and of course a snap pocket for your change, which at that time would buy you your next copy of FM, or the latest Aurora model at the local hobby shop, or a ticket to the movies or... Man, those "were" the days!

May 15 04 2:19 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Man, I wouldn't mind having one of those right now. Some of the new DVD covers have a very pleasing scent. I also remember how good many vinyl albums used to smell after you opened the cellophane. But nothing compares to the old mimeographed test papers we used to get in school. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

May 16 04 12:22 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Those FM wallets make the 60s ones look like fine leather goods! Here's a pic of the SSP Frank, Drac, Wolf and Creature wallet art. Plus the 4 cards. And the Mummy and Phantom wallets. They did come with the "magic slate" and a red "stylus".

I don't have my wallet anymore (dang) but I did acquire a still sealed copy of "Speak" from 63 on the AA label some years back which was quite a kick. That put the topping on my quest to collect all the albums that were advertised in the back of FM at that time. It was quite fun and I got almost all of them off EBay at really good prices. The best buy I got was an auction for three Spike Jones albums listed with one Halloween record. Nobody bid but me so I got them for a buck. When they arrived there was an absolutely dead on mint copy still in the plastic of "in Hi-Fi". The hardest to find were "Shock" music "Nightmare" and the LOL "Batman" album the was in the mag.

It was an aroma shared by my Universal Monster wallet, my talking Herman Munster from Mattel, and my inflatable Sinclair dinosaur. A different but equally captivating smell is one I remember from another monster collectable. There used to be a department store chain here in Cincinnati called Ontario or Ontario's, and at the end of the checkout aisles were these machines. You dropped in 50 or 75 cents and some kind of hot wax was poured into a mold and it made you a waxen figure while you waited. The one I remember best was a blue casting of King Kong. It came out of the machine still warm and you had to be careful not to impress it with your eager fingers. I can remember well sitting in the backseat of our car, holding Kong in both hands, and sniffing him -- like he sniffed Fay Wray, in footage I wouldn't see for quite a few more years -- all the way home.

Does anyone have the originals of these, it would be really cool if someone on this board could do something with that stuff like um, do another run of the original wallets (with the old smell). Ok, something easier. How about a poster collage of all the wallet artwork. Theres got to be a printer in the woodshed somewhere around here.

It was really great, and I loved it so much that I used through two years of elementary school, until it literally fell apart. The painting was dead-on (pun intended) accurate, and had a Bama-esque look to it, but I don't think it was actually him. I assume there must have been a Dracula binder as well. Did anyone else own one of these? Frank Dietz

You can see the Frank and Drac art on this page at mywebsite. (Click the b/w pix to see large color ones.) I have no idea who the artists on those old Hasbro products were? (Not Bama, though.) Like the Castle Films artists (and other old monster art), their names are probably long lost. The binder art was also used on the boxes for the Hasbro paint-by-number sets.
