I liked the colors of the Frankenstein art and the scene of the Wolf Man crouched behind the tree grabbed me as a kid, but of the first three kits, Dracula is the real masterpiece. Even though it's based on a still from ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, not the original DRACULA, it captures Lugosi at his majestic best. The Creature and the Mummy are good but are based so closely on the model kits that that even look kinda plastic. I loved the red background and yellowish green color of the Creature art, but I wish the Mummy had been more gray or brownish or even a moldy green, rather than that turquoise color. The Phantom is another great one. While it would have been cool to see a Bama version of Chaney as the Phantom, the painting was based on an exceptionally cool photo of James Cagney from MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES. Bama's original Hunchback art was a really great painting of the Quinn Hunchback on the wheel, but the revised art really suffers from the generic changes. The Bride of Frankenstein is a great portrait of Elsa Lanshester as the Bride being brought to life. Hyde was pretty cool too, but a little dull compared to most of the others. Kong and Godzilla were okay but not as interesting to me as the more human-like monsters. The Witch is an impressive painting but as mainly a movie monster fan, I didn't care much for the non-character and never had a desire to buy the kit. Same goes for the Forgotten Prisoner. Someone should gather excellent reproductions of all the classic Monster Boom art and publish it in a book, along with a scholarly treatise on why it was an important part of pop culture. I bought a couple of really nice prints off a guy at the '95 Famous Monsters convention (that guy who is a big Munsters collector, who was with Al Lewis there), of the James Bama Big Frankie Box painting (also used for the FM '65 Yearbook cover) and the Dick Prezio Munsters family portrait that graced the cover of Monster World. What happened to all of Gogos' paintings? He's got some on his site, but not the key pieces from the '60s. Around '93 I saw a beautiful painting of Price and Lorre (from a publicity still for Corman's "The Raven") at the Ackermansion, prints of which I later saw briefly offered in Famous Monsters (for about $50 each!) Where is the art for the Famous Monsters Speak record? Or Jack Davis' amazing monster rallies? Gathering cobwebs in some file cabinet? Or framed in Joe Dantes' den? I guess the expense of tracking this part of our history down would outweigh the potential gain. I see other volumes of horror memorabilia that consist of thoughtless choices and lots of filler. If a person with the taste and acumen of a Count Gamula or myself could edit such a collection, it would be a classic. As the years pass, these works are whisked further from us, like dust on the wind.
