This was the mini-series that took the comic world by storm last year. After hearing about how great it was and watching it win Best Comic on some horror awards show (Scream Awards? Fango's Chainsaw Awards?), I asked for the hardcover collection for Christmas, making it the first Marvel I've read in years.
SPOILERS
I'm not sure what the fuss is about. There's relatively little plot. It's simply about the heroes grumbling about how there's no one left to eat, then scrambling to get the biggest portion whenever someone does show up.
The popularity seems to come mainly from the shock value of seeing zombified popular Marvel superheroes rotting and mutilated and eating other characters. Daredevil has a hole in his chest you can throw a baseball through. The top half of Colonel America's brain has been shorn off. Hulk gorges on a whole leg, but when he reverts to Banner, the undigested limb bursts out of his stomach (then Thor eats it). Some of it makes no sense: shouldn't Wolverine's healing ability have rejected the zombie virus? In another scene, Wolverine says his healing ability doesn't work now that he's dead. But the other deceased heroes' abilities seem to work just fine. Bruce Banner still becomes the Hulk, although now when he's hungry instead of angry. And why is Ghost Rider a zombie? Doesn't being a demon trump becoming a zombie?
Yes, parts of it are disturbing, and parts of it are darkly humorous, but I guess I was expecting something more.
Other thoughts?
