You know, a couple of under-rated artists that I've only grown to like more and more over the years are: Don Newton - Loved his work on Batman (Detective Comics), Return of the New Gods, etc. Dick Dillin - I had tears in my eyes when I found out he died while reading an issue of JLA. I know I didn't list him in my top ten, but he is about the most reliable artist of all time. totally consistent like nobody else. I always knew that the art would be satisfying if Dillin was doing it. JLA was never again the same without him. And this one always raises eyebrows - Sal Buscema I always enjoyed his work far more than his brother Jon Buscema's. With Jim Mooney inking Sal Buscema, they cranked out some of what I consider to be totally perfect comic book art. Here's 2 samples from Thor #214 (one of my favorite Thor issues ever): Clean bold lines, nice proportions, easy on the eye, dynamic, good panel layout, etc. Awesome!

Although Dillin wasn't a "Batman" artist in the strictest sense (his World's Finest work in the early/mid 70's was awesome as well!), he was underappreciated or at least taken for granted during his JLA run. And what a run it was; spanning uninterrupted from #64 Aug., 1968 to #183 Oct. 1980. I think his frequent pairing with the very pedestrian inker Frank McLaughlin held back Dillin's accomplishments. He fared much better when he had inkers like Joe Giella or Dick Giordano. Oh, but there was that one great issue of World's Finest #218 (1973) when it was the team of Dick Dillin (pencils) and Dave Cockrum (inks). But as far as Batman, I think that JLA and World's Finest portrayed the hero in a different light than in his own mag or Detective or even Brave and the Bold. Whether as a partner to Superman or as part of the Justice League ensemble, Batman was rarely given the opportunity to show his dark side. He was always the "brain" up in the JLA headquarters or as a subordinate to Superman in World's Finest.

Jun 20 07 6:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My preffered presentation of Batman is of a dark menacing figure in a horror movie world, which is captured well by much of the early comics, the 70's work of O'Neill, Adams, Englehart, Rogers, etc., Tim Burton's films and the animated series. When I was a child, I thought Batman was a monster and I like him as this frightening, mysterious figure. I tend to judge Batman artists by how they portray the Joker, my favourite character. From an adult perspective, it's actually Dick Sprang's that I find the most unnerving, with the grusome oversized mouth and clown-like menace. On the other end of the spectrum is the lacklustre Joker by Carmine Infantino, which looks very dull, and the elaborate but unimpressive drooling maniac of Hush. Jim Aparo's Brave and Bold stories frequently display a menacing Joker but his depiction in A Death In The Family looked rather weak. One really odd presentation that I can't make up my mind whether I like it or not, is the impossibly skinny, almost female, interpretation by Alan Davis and Paul Neary, which looks suitably odd but isn't very scary Bruce Timm's Joker underwent a rather bizzare metamorphis in between cartoon series, ending up looking like an unholy cross between a JackO Lantern and one of the Animaniacs, but thanks to Mark Hamil, the result is still great!

I grew up during his many (EXTENDED) runs on comics such as Marvel Team-Up, The Defenders, Captain America and the Falcon, and (later) the Incredible Hulk. Granted, he wasn't the "fanciest" of artists, but he was consistently SOLID, especially considering his prodigious output during the mid-seventies. Re: Dick Dillin, he was also of that Buscema mold, not an artist who was going to ignite the industry on fire, but a seasoned craftsman who always handed in a pleasing (if not "awe inspiring") finished product. To Killer Meteor: I favor the "darker" portrayal of Batman as well. As I stated in an earlier post, the original, almost "pulpy" feel of Bob Kane's early work has rarely been surpassed, even in the "Modern era" And YES, Dick Sprang (whose Batman I was never overly enamored of), did EXCELL with the "Rouges' Gallery" (the Joker, and to an even greater degree, Two-Face) Bryan

Jun 20 07 11:23 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	To me Sal Buscema is Marvel.. it seems when I was a kid he drew almost every other damn Marvel comic! Love his stuff and of course his brothers art that Sal mimicked so well. Rich Buckler is another fave, as is Ross Andru. Frank Robbins stuff has grown on me as an adult and I see how great it really is, But as a 7 year old kid I was always disappointed after seeing the great Kirby cover to an Invaders and then seeing the interior wasn't the same... Jun 21 07 1:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love ROM! It would make a helluva movie -- alien robot in West Virginia, fighting demonic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"-type baddies. I always liked Frank Robbins. My favorite INVADERS issues were the two where the team fought Baron Blood (maybe issues 7 and 8?) with the help of Union Jack. Robbins' had the disadvantage of following Kaluta on The Shadow, a tough job for anybody, but his work there was cool, too. Just not as cool as Kaluta's.

I still clearly remember the day I bought that magazine 30-some years ago. It's been on my want list now that I'm rebuilding my comic collection, and I can't wait to get my hands on it again!
