Jul 15 06 10:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Drastically curtailing my new-comics spending the last couple years has freed me up to buy a lot of the Masterworks and Archives editions. I'm collecting the first 100 issues each of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and FANTASTIC FOUR in Masterworks editions, plus I'll probably keep buying the CAPTAIN AMERICA hardcovers at least through the Cap/Red Skull Cosmic Cube identity-switch storyline that culminated around ish 118. I hope also to see forthcoming more volumes of Bill Everett's SUB-MARINER. With DC's Archives I'm collecting GREEN LANTERN, PLASTIC MAN, THE DOOM PATROL, CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN, ENEMY ACE, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS (just completed), ALL STAR (also just completed), and the first volume of THE METAL MEN should be coming my way any day now. I also grabbed the three-volume Neal Adams' BATMAN series, which reprints everything Adams did with the character including covers and pin-ups, record covers--everything! Purists might look askance at the recoloring, but I personally think they look terrific. Despite the price, I shy away from Marvel's Essentials line because I don't like the paper stock or a lot of the printing. I did buy WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, though. As far as DC Showcase collections, I have the HOUSE OF MYSTERY, JONAH HEX, and ELONGATED MAN collections. I recently saw an announcement somewhere for a series coming out in a Showcase edition that had me leap to my feet and shout "Yes!" but it seems that info has already vacated my brain. What a great, great time to not only be a monster kid, but a comic kid, too! ADDENDUM: The DC Showcase edition that I couldn't remember above is THE PHANTOM STRANGER! Being released in time for Halloween, 18 October! I always enjoyed this character, especially when drawn by Jim Aparo-- one of the greats.

I am going to order the FF version, which features 44 years of issues (20,000 pages), including letters pages and ads - all in color - for $39 via amazon.com. Currently, Spidey exists only in an 11-CD set, but a one-disk DVD-Rom version is on the way. Only a few years back, I would not have considered throwing over paper versions for electronic, but given space, convenience, and price considerations, I am going for it. I have read a number of comics in computerized versions, and one thing they have going for them is you get the original coloring, not the garish re-colorings of recent hardback releases, which is tantamount in my mind with colorizing old black and white films. Anyway, I spend so much time on the computer now that I'm not really bothered by reading comic books that way, a sea change in my way of viewing the medium. I'll always have a place for actual paper comics, of course, but this might be the wave of the future. Could you imagine the entire EC Library on one disk? I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Just gettin too old, I guess. Would I be correct in thinking that a collection on DVD-Rom would include the complete comics, including ads and letters pages? That is one thing I miss in the Archives and Masterworks. (Although the Fantastic Four Omnibus hardcover, which reprints the first 30 issues and the first annual, does include the letters pages.)

And it took me a while to get over the idea of not having the books on paper. Of course, that would be ideal, but when I compare the cost of buying and storing the originals, I can learn to live with 'em on DVD-Rom. I guess I could always print each page...

I have a book from the Library the Complete Jack Kirby, March-May 1947 and it certainly looks interesting. I hope that this will be a series. Airboy, Crime doesnt Pay and I sure am looking forward to getting this book home.

Sep 27 06 7:22 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Picked up ESSENTIAL TALES OF THE ZOMBIE today at my local comics shop. It contains the entire run of TOTZ, and a few "voodoo-ish" stories from DRACULA LIVES to boot. Interesting that this time around, Marvel's reprinted not just all the story content, but also all the (mostly awful) text pieces, pinups and even old subscription ads, I guess in an effort to bulk up the book. I loved this comic back in the day, but in all honesty, I have to admit the stories are pretty weak by today's standards and very little of the art floats my boat anymore. The reproduction quality isn't horrible, but not great either -- the zip-a-tone shading tends to bunch-up and get murky, and sometimes prints just way too dark (Brother Voodoo is REALLY a "black" man now!), but the continuous-tone "wash" jobs actually look pretty decent. Can't tell if they're printing these from old stats or creating new plates by scanning them off actual comics. Anyhow, "marginal thumbs-up" from me.

Sep 28 06 12:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Unfortunately, the Marvel black-and-white magazine line was really a rush job designed to put Warren out of business. They literally flooded the market with shoddy material for a short period of time, then abruptly closed shop. It's too bad, because the characters used--Shang Chi, Simon Garth, the Man-Thing, Brother Voodoo, Morbius, Lillith, Dracula and the rest all had potential. I was a huge fan of the PLANET OF THE APES magazine as a child as well. But Marvel never had enough quality material to keep the line--with the exception of CONAN--afloat. It's interesting to note that the ESSENTIAL TOMB OF DRACULA Vol. 4 censors the reprint material from the original DRACULA LIVES magazine by altering the artwork to cover up all depictions of nudity.

Sep 29 06 1:32 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	From what I can gather via the solicitations, looks like it's gonna be an "ALL SATANIC SPECTACULAR", with all the Son of Satan stories from GHOST RIDER, MARVEL SPOTLIGHT, his own title and even from the team-up books, and also all the Satana stories from VAMPIRE TALES, HAUNT OF HORROR and her MARVEL PREMIERE one-shot. It's gonna be pretty schizophrenic, art-wise, from the mainstream cartoon stylings of Herb Trimpe and Sal Buscema to the more sophisticated "adult" approach of Russ Heath and Esteban Maroto. There's definitely some outstanding work in there, something for every taste. Oh yeah, I just remembered, there's a pretty intense two-part "Exorcist" knock-off in SPOTLIGHT drawn by Gene Colan that should look pretty sweet in b/w. There's also an ESSENTIAL MAN-THING on the way, with nice work by Ploog, Sutton, Morrow and others.

I'm a purist about such things, but I understand the company's intent: The rest of the volume was Comics Code Approved work, and the "cover ups" affected only a few panels out of thousands. It was probably easier to censor than to slap a mature label on the book and limit sales.

I pre-ordered it through Amazon.com and just got an email from them asking me to approve a delay--with a new shipping estimate of late December!?! Looks like an order cancellation and a weekend jaunt to one of the local comic book stores is in my near future.

I'm not sure if the sale is still in effect, but tfaw.com was selling these books for 75% off if you used the code YOUJANE while checking out. Great stuff; while I've always appreciatd Kubert as an artist, I've become a huge fan of his in the past couple of years. Also just finished Essential Classic X-Men vol. 2. I have to admit, I really like Arnold Drake's short run in that series...
