Specific work for hire agreements weren't used until about 1978 after some changes in copyright laws gave more rights to the creators of published work. Before then there was just a legal note o the back of the artists' paycheck. By signing their checks they gave the copyright to the publisher. The possible legal problem could come when the original copyright expires. Since there are some conceivable gray areas where work from the early '60s is concerned, it would probably be in Marvel's best interest to create new coloring under current copyright laws. Again, all this is speculation on my part.

I follow stories of various comic lawsuits with interest, since the history of the medium I love so much is rife with tales of creators selling their creations for very little money, losing out on lucrative licensing opportunities, and often being divorced from their creations at a moment's notice. Of course, the standard work-for-hire agreement was one of the few choices available to those pre-70s creators who chose to make a living in comics, so many signed just to find work in their field of choice. To get this threat somewhat back on track, I read recently where Marvel is publishing a Masterworks volume (or perhaps it's already available) of pre-hero Tales to Astonish, so lots of big monsters by the likes of Kirby, Lee, Ditko and Ayers. That sounds like fun. And I saw in a comics shop just today an edition of Marvel Milestones (priced at just $4.99, I think) reprinting a 70s issue of Marvel Presents, which featured monster-hunting Bloodstone battling a big, green creature on the cover. A little short on cash this month, so I had to pass on the book, but I did note the back cover said the NEXT issue reprints Marvel Spotlight (vol. 2) #5, a gem of a giant monster story by Steve Ditko called DRAGON LORD (it had a Frank Miller cover). It's one of my favorite guilty-pleasure Marvels and I definitely plan to pick it up!

The cover looks enticing, and the artwork, especially all the great pre-Spidey Ditko material, great. Jan 27 06 5:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just ordered the "Werewolf by Night" Essentials Collection from Amazon. Thanks for letting me know about this! I had "Werewolf by Night" #1 as a kid and it was the first comic book that ever made me think, "hey, this artwork is really good - you gotta' be a really good artist to draw comic books...!" Much later I learned the artist who impressed me so much was Mike Ploog. This will bring back a lot of memories. I remember one panel in particular that really impressed me, that I remember to this day. I even copied it as a kid. "If I had a hidden microphone inside of my heart, I would turn the power on..."

Jan 28 06 1:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have the Monster Masterworks paperback collection from a few years back, the one with a really cool Walter Simonson wraparound cover and a Jack Kirby introduction. I love the stories and the art - they're a lot of fun: Groot, Fin Fang Foom, Taboo, The Blip, Spoor and all the rest. The only annoying thing about the collection is the cover gallery in the back showcases covers used in the 70s when the stories were reprinted, instead of the original covers. Otherwise, it's great, and reading it makes me wistful enough for the era that I'm tempted to drop $35 for the Tales to Astonish collection, but I agree an Essentials volume would be better. I'm excited by the upcoming Showcase Presents volume by DC that reprints a lot of the House of Mystery stories from the 70s in an economical format. I'm definitely picking up that one.

Jan 31 06 5:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just want to say that the Introductions written by Roy Thomas for the latest round of Marvel Masterworks are fabulous. I enjoyed reading the ones by Stan "The Man" Lee, which were fun, but Thomas' intros are more like article-length memoirs, well-written and rich in detail. The newest AVENGERS includes a wonderful reminiscence of what it was like to work with the late, great John Buscema.

I wasn't around for the original E.C. titles, but I've bought many of the reprint comics from Gladstone and others. Even so, I would gladly pony up the cash for entire runs of the E.C. titles in affordable, crisp B&W.

I do want to get the Complete EC Pictofiction set, which is out in a handsome hardcover with a slipcase. Some beautiful line art in those black and white stories.

Feb 8 06 11:29 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was born just a LITTLE too late for Kirby (although I do remember reading KAMANDI when I was a kid, my first real exposure to him was DEVIL DINOSAUR, a book that fascinated me, even though I was too old for it). MARVEL TALES gave me Ditko at the right time, but it's really the Essentials that have shown me The King at a time in my life when I can truly appreciate him. It's not nostalgia, it's not naivete; I tell you, as an adult with fully developed tastes- there was simply never anyone better at this, and I doubt there ever can be. In a just world, he would be more famous than his imitators... but since the work is out there, I guess we'll have to settle for him outlasting them. Pick up an Essential Fantastic Four today...and another to give to a child,

Feb 8 06 3:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm reading the latest FANTASTIC FOUR Masterworks now, Volume 9. This is the first volume to collect issues that I never read in their original run, and I am impressed to discover that the book's quality remained not only consistent but perhaps became superior around this time (#s 82-93). I love the way Kirby includes at least one splash page per issue, and his choice of which moment in the story to deliver that gesture is always interesting, sometimes surprising. Joe Sinnott's inks really make Kirby's art sing -- and I can't imagine reading these comics in black-and-white, the color is so intoxicating.

Feb 10 06 2:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love the Showcase and Essential formats. I much perfer the B&W artwork in these, particularly Gene Colan's work on Tomb of Dracula. I'm not a big fan of the superhero genre, so I've only gotten a few of these (the 4 Tomb vols., Jonah Hex, Howard the Duck, Killraven), but it looks like DC will be adding to the collection with the release of House of Mystery Vol.1. I just hope they see fit to publish some more collections of their anthology line.

The character started as a guest-star in Werewolf By Night before moving to a series in the back of THE HULK color magazine and then to his own solo series. Those original adventures are reprinted, including one issue of THE HULK penciled by Gene Colan, whose art looks lovely in b&w, as always. Coming soon in the ESSENTIAL format is Marvel's 70s series GODZILLA, which was one of my favorites as a kid, and NOVA, a combo of the Spider-Man/Green Lantern concepts that was always a lot of fun. I'm going broke on all these "inexpensive" collections!

Mar 18 06 2:12 PM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just picked up Essential TOMB OF DRACULA #3. I think it has just been reissued because I wasn't able to find it before. It has the usual great art by Gene Colan but the real icing on the cake is a Steve Ditko story I had never seen before. It's a full length 36 page story from the b&w magazine done in wash ink like the classic stories Ditko did for Creepy magazine in the '60s.

It's from issue #2 of the Tomb of Dracula B&W magazine and marked the first time in years that somebody other than Colan and Palmer drew the character. Still written by Wolfman, though, who gave us a H.P. Lovecraft-inspired story perfect for Ditko's creepy art. Great stuff!
