I was perusing my comic shop (one that I just started to go to, long story why I avoided them for so long), when I stumbled across something buried behind a bunch of other things on the shelf. It was the GIT Corp DVD-Rom of the complete collection of Captain America. These came out back around 2007, but once Marvel started doing their online digital, they suddenly pulled the rights from GIT. I have the Spider-Man which includes all of the Amazing run (up to 2007) and the annuals. This one, the Cap, contains all of the Silver-age Cap, up to Brubaker's landmark issue 25. These are great fun if one can stand reading on a computer screen. But they are the entire books, ads, letters, everything. So, why did I get lucky? If one was to search online at all, you will find most sellers doing the "out of print, must be worth a fortune" thing and pricing them as high as . . . ready for this . . . $1000! Well, that is just a ridiculous price, obviously. I got the Spidey when they first came out and only paid the $50 they normally went for. But while rummaging and finding the Cap, I held it up and showed the manager of the store. I asked how long they had it for, and he said probably since it was released. He asked me what they priced it at, and I told him $49.99. He then gave a sour type face, and I fully expected him to say they would have to price it higher now. Then he looked at me and said "do you want it? I can let it go right now for $30 if you want it." So now I finally have the Cap disc! I admit the reading on a computer sucks, but I also lay money on it this is the only way the entire run will ever be released. I collect the omnibus line of the top teir Marvel heroes, and the Essentials for everybody else. Cap I collect everything. Omnibus, Essential, TPB, you name it. BUT, Marvel seems to have slowed down the Essential line, and I expect they will take forever to complete the runs. May 15 12 1:04 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Picked up ESSENTIAL BLACK PANTHER last week, collects the entire Don McGregor / Rich Buckler / Billy Graham "Jungle Action" run, plus the first ten (of twelve) Jack Kirby issues of T'Challa's eponymous title. Talk about a weird mix! Both series are great in their own way, but they're like polar opposites -- the McGregor stuff is epic but humanistic, while the Kirby stuff is just pure gonzo wacky sci-fi. And why they cut the book off with two Kirby issues left to go, who knows? Seems like an oddly random editorial choice to me. But, having said that, it's a TOTALLY worthwhile purchase. The art is spectacularly reproduced throughout, the Billy Graham stuff looks especially nice. Another recent purchase -- technically not an Essential, Masterwork or Archive, but still -- DC just released the entire run of the J.M. deMatteis / Bruce Jones / Tom Sutton "I, VAMPIRE" series from HOUSE OF MYSTERY in one good-sized trade paperback. It's a fairly lightweight but fun action/horror hybrid, that faintly echoes DARK SHADOWS and even anticipates some elements of Joss Whedon's ANGEL series. I enjoyed it.

I was told that some of the Essential books are becoming rare and this one was on the list. Other titles becoming rare include Conan, Moon Knight, Godzilla, Werewolf By Night, Frankenstein.

Jul 20 12 11:03 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Two recent DC SHOWCASE phonebooks -- The Spectre and Rip Hunter, Time Master. The Spectre book is interesting, containing pretty much all his Silver and Bronze Age appearances. There are three or four stories by the unlikely team of Jerry Grandenetti and Murphy Anderson, which work a lot better than you might think, with Grandenetti's trademark cartoony distortions, bizarre layouts and forced perspectives tempered by Anderson's super-slick naturalistic inks. Amazing that they didn't just cancel each other out. One BIG caveat: all the Fleisher / Aparo stories have had grey tones randomly added to the art. It's not horribly done, just completely unnecessary. I was really looking forward to seeing these particular stories in glorious black and white. Dang. So, marginal thumbs-up. Rip Hunter is a comic I'd never really paid attention to before, but there's two stories by Kubert, two by Toth, three or four by Nick Cardy. Just from flipping through the book, the stories look like goofy science-fantasy fun.

I always had a fondness for RIP HUNTER TIME MASTER, though, like most DC comics of the period, there was an over abundance of dinosaurs and space aliens. Aug 18 12 1:35 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just got the WARLOCK phonebook in the mail today from Amazon. It leaves out his origin story (as "Him") from FF and his run-in with Thor, but otherwise complete -- the Roy Thomas / Mike Freidrich / Gil Kane "Jesus Christ, Superhero" issues, the Hulk crossover issues, and the trippy Moorcock-inspired Jim Starlin issues. I loved this stuff back in the day, but have to admit the Thomas / Freidrich / Kane iteration feels heavy-handed and extremely dated now, and the Starlin iteration may be too free-form and psychedelic for its own good. On the plus side, the art holds up VERY well -- I think Starlin was at his artistic peak here and Kane was really swinging for the fences on his run. So, recommended.

This reprints the first 20 issues of the series and boasts some decent art and fun stories that run about six pages each. Worth a buy especially if you can get it for around $10. "The world's going to change tonight, doctor, I'm glad you'll be able to watch it. And... happy Halloween."

Nov 1 12 6:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	since my last post here i have collected all star comics archives vol. 1 to 9. go justice society of america.as a side note i hate the way the new version of the justice society in new 52`s earth 2 comic has the justice charactors all be contempory charactors with no connection to the 1940`s but beginning their hero careers at this time in history.being an alternate world and not the main dc universe the 40`s background could still work.

What an amazing line-up of artists: Joe Kubert, Russ Heath, Gene Colan, Reed Crandall, Morts Meskin and Drucker, Alex Toth, Frank Robbins, George Evans, and of course the Fab Fillipinos: Nestor Redondo, Alex Nino, Alfredo Alcala and Tony DeZuniga.

Mar 16 13 11:12 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	ESSENTIAL CAPTAIN MARVEL VOL. 2 -- starts off with three issues drawn by Wayne Boring (of all people!), then the famous Jim Starlin super-duper cosmic extravaganzas, followed by ten or so issues by Englehart and Milgrom. The Starlin stuff has been reprinted several times before -- in fact, I'm SO familiar with it, I almost didn't buy the new phonebook edition. But I flipped through it at the comics shop, and boy, Starlin's art looks GREAT in b/w, so I snapped it up. Kinda interested in checking out the Englehart/Milgrom issues again, haven't read them since they were first published. Back then I wasn't too impressed -- felt like the stories were weird but not especially exciting, and Milgrom seemed like a pale imitation of Starlin. We'll see if time has been kind to them. But anyhow, totally recommended for the Starlin issues alone.

Mar 18 13 8:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm reading SHOWCASE PRESENTS ......... SHOWCASE (!), a redundant title, but fun stuff nonetheless. Once you get past the firefighters and the manhunting gumshoes, the Dawn of the Silver Age Super Heroes really kick it into gear. Early FLASH is colorfully imaginative (Infantino inked by Kubert feels Nouveau/Retro all at the same time). LOIS LANE is like reading I Love Lucy Meets George Reeves. And CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN is pure and total Kirby all the way -- the style of his Golden Age DC stuff mixed with the pop-culture smorgasbord of his later DC material, while glimpses of SKY MASTERS and the Mighty Marvel dynamics literally leap across panel borders. The Ultivac story, f'rinstance, is a mix of KONG, COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK, INVISIBLE BOY and TOBOR, if you can imagine such a thing (Jack Kirby could!). Looking forward to Rip Hunter, Space Ranger and Adam Strange in the second half of the book, none of which I've ever actually read before.
