I've recently discovered this board and have been really enjoying the threads here. its been a real godsend to discover such a board, and read the opinions of other like minded folks. haven't had the urge to pipe in with an opinion or anything, but decided to get an account to ask a question (please pardon my spelling!).
as a fairly new fan of older horror and sci-fi, I am trying to find good magazines and books to read that write critically and in depth on genre cinema. I discovered video watchdog about a year and half ago, and in many ways it's to blame for my enthusiasm for genre film. with each issue of video watchdog I wait weeks for it to come out, only to read the whole thing within a day or two. its not enough.
I found a copy of the old RE/Search book on bizzarre cinema which was excellent, and have read some of tom weaver's great interview books as well as the video watchdog book. looking at old issues of cinemafantastique have been great too, really in depth smart writing and interviews. but the magazine in it's current state basically sucks, and back issues are super expensive. fangoria too, is pretty bad, with all the articles basically reading as long press releases. Rue Morgue has some pretty decent articles, but its a bit 'goth-y' for my tastes. by searching around I have gotten some amazingly well written self published zines from the seventies, but they are expensive.
beyond that, so many of the monster, b-movie, cult, etc., magazines that do come out regulalry are too wrapped up in nostalgia for my tastes or badly written or just one paragraph 'reviews' of current dvd's. my interests in genre doesn't have much to do with nostalgia at all (I was born in 1980 and most of the films I am interested in are 1920-1970).
so what books and magazines do you think feature the best writing on film? ideally, in a perfect world catered only to me, there would be like a quarterly magazine, 260 pages in length that had interviews and criticall articles on fantastic cinema covering people like george franju, val lewton, larry clark, frank henenlotter, andy milligan, terrence fisher, mario bava, and lon chaney.
I would love to hear what people are reading......
