I just wanted to pay brief tribute to an old monster mag that I loved. Castle of Frankenstein was one of Forry's competitors, and the fact that it came out on an irregular basis made it extremely hard to build up its readership. At the same time, it had writers such as Bhob Stewart and Joe Dante Jr. doing capsule reviews for it. At a time when the mainstream paid scant attention to the genre, it would have non-kiddie, non-pun oriented serious articles and interviews with major figures in the genre. I also loved that Calvin Beck, the editor, did write about serious issues in his editorials--that a monster mag would have something intelligent to say about the Vietnam War and other unrest of the time.
That said, the fan-produced PHOTON was a better magazine overall, and FANTASTIC MONSTERS OF THE MOVIES had access to some cooler Blaisdel photos, but CoF does deserve respect for keeping the torch going and elevating the standards during its heydey. Some modern mags think they have attitude, but I suggest they could learn something from CoF which tooks seriously the things that ought to be taken seriously while still providing a fun read.
