As most of you, I've been intrigued as much about this lost film footage as the censored Spider pit Sequence clipped from King Kong or perhaps London After Midnight ever turning up. From what I've read here and there, it appears Lugosi definitely was Universal's first choice to play a monster in their next feature after the success of DRACULA. Bela didn't seem to grasp that to them he was to be their "Bogeyman" typecast forever as any monster Universal wanted to try out. Bela's agent accepted the next film, FRANKENSTEIN under the impression his client was to play Doctor Frankenstein and NOT the monster. When Bela showed up he was prepared for his "starring" role as the MONSTER. This from information obtained from Bela's own scrapbook. The film then under Robert Florey was different from the final James Whale version. How the Monster was to appear was up to Jack Pierce and Robert Florey. There are eyewitness accounts by Edward Van Sloan and Pierce himself stating the test footage shot had Bela made up like the Golem..which if you look at the advance publicity from Universal, it depicts Lugosi as a giant with makeup looking almost exactly as he appears in Murders of the Rue Morgue. From Bela's scrapbook we also learn that Lugosi had trouble with the weight and large coal boots he was wearing. Eventually Bela pleads with Universal to be released from the film. His decision based on the fact he just wasn't able to endure the heavy makeup and most likely his disappointment at not playing the good Doctor but his monstrous creation. It's interesting that Pierce blames Lugosi for the Golem style makeup citing Bela had his own ideas. Personally I don't think Lugosi wielded that kind of power to tell the art department how to do their job. We do know that the makeup for the monster wasn't ever finalized until Whale and Karloff were there and even now there survives a shot of ONE of the different "test" makeups of Karloff with two large metal links in his forehead instead of the single bloody gash later used. It is also know that karloff made "suggestions" like the removal of a bridge in his mouth to give the monste's cheeks a more sunken in look. Was the makeup some wild concoction Bela himself made? I doubt it. IMHO I believe alot of how Bela Lugosi's monster look is seen in Murders In The Rue Morgue. The advance artwork for Frankenstein is uncanny in the similiarity. Universal most likely to save money and time already wasted on Lugosi's "monster" makeup simply recycled it into Rue Morgue. The strange wild looking hair and one piece brow..look odd and out of place for the makeup of Lugosi's character in Rue Morgue. Why not leave Lugosi without makeup and allow him to personify the evil? Clearly the story and the role don't call for the weird makeup applied to Lugosi. Here in Murders In The Rue Morgue, Lugosi gets to play a twisted scientist of the sort he thought he would portray in Frankenstein. You can almost imagine Universal taking bits and pieces of the early Frankenstein project and throwing them into Murders In The Rue Morgue. Why waste anything and why not recycle the whole business set decoration everything into another bogeyman film? Florey must have shot footage and developed enough material to shoe horn it into an Edgar Allan Poe film. This was one time Universal made a good decision. Also I read that Bela himself had recommended Karloff as his substitute to play the monster. Later Whale was to claim it was his "partner" who discovered Karloff in the Universal Cafeteria, and recommended his "look" as suitable for a Monster. Universal obviously wasn't sure of Karloff with their monster....? credits. Well we will probably never see this legendary test footage but I'm convinced the advance artwork for Frankenstein looks so similiar to Lugosi in Murders In The Rue Morgue it can't be coincidence.
