A couple months ago (in a thread on this section), I learned that Famous Monsters was accepting submissions for cover and interior artwork. Although I have been drawing monsters since I was old enough to hold a crayon, I had never really considered this type of submittal. However, this proposition motivated me to put together a portfolio of some of my work. It has now been more than a month and I have not yet heard anything back from FM, so, in the mean time, I thought I would share them with all of you. Below are some of the samples I sent. The characters I chose were, I felt, were either under-represented or a character I could offer a new take on.

First, there is Glenn Strange from the House of Dracula. I always liked this shot and wanted to give it the blacklight, day-glo treatment reminiscent of the square box Aurora models of the 1970s. Then I have the Wolfman from Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, I always loved this shot because he looked particularly vicious and cunning.

Now on to the ladies; I included them because (other than the Bride of Frankenstein) female monsters dont get many cover slots. Above is Paula the Ape Woman from Captive Wild Woman. While this is not one of the best Universal entries, it is worth a peek for some great make-up from Jack Pierce. Also, Gloria Holden AKA Countess Maria Zaleska from Draculas Daughter. A very, very overlooked character in Universals monster lineup. The color scheme I used was based on movie posters of the time.

Obviously, this is the Gill-man, minus his gills, from the Creature Walks Among Us. I included this one because this film has never graced the cover of FM, and it is, in my opinion, the last of the classic Universal monster movies. And finally, a rendering of mother Bates from Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho. This was a drawing of mine that was retouched in the computer. I had wanted to do a majority of the pictures this way, with only a couple of samples that were straight Photoshop; however, I liked the way the Photoshop ones turned out so much, that I flipped that figure around.
I hope you all enjoy them as much I enjoyed creating them. Ill let you know what I hear back from FM. Also, if any other magazines, websites, etc are looking for submissions, please let me know.
