It was aimed at grade schoolers... and in fact I probrably got it through that Sholastic Book Club of recomended books every gradeschool I've even been in was a part of, and which was so often a godsend in trying to convince the parents in buying me classic horror related books!
Anyway, the book had faithful if simplistic "How to" make-up designs for all the Universal Monsters, including Chaney's The Phantom (My 5th grade Halloween costume!), and all done with things you are apt to have in either the kitchen or the mom's makeup cabinet. It was illustrated only with black and white doagrams cartoons, and I have no recollection whether it was sanctioned by Universal despite the Wolfman, Frankenstien, Phantom and Dracula makeups all being very Uni.
Another cool bit I remember was a chapter about how to do a Jeckyl and Hyde stage skit using the red and blue makeup and colored lights that was actually used in the MGM version and in some stage productions. Cool little book, and it was maybe what cemented my fascination with FX makeup and Lon Chaney!
