I found this one to be pretty weak tea. Despite a couple of notable flaws, I enjoyed the "original" ANNABELLE as a well-filmed love letter to ROSEMARY'S BABY, and found myself largely alone in that assessment! But here's an origin story for demonic conduit doll Annabelle, and it is really hampered by the lack of a strong central protagonist. For most of the movie we're stuck with a gaggle of subpar young girl actresses who I just found really inadequate to carry the already thin story. This group of orphans heads out to the home of a couple whose child was lost in a tragic accident, and they spend much of their time verrry...slowly....approaching....dark spaces, intermittently interrupted by big LOUD NOISES on the soundtrack. THE CONJURING movies are pretty good, but their bratty dolly stepchild series is only batting 50-50 in my book. This one has some brief foreshadowing of the upcoming THE NUN, too. I'd be fine if this is the last outing for Annabelle and they don't try to keep three concurrent James Wan money-grab series going (not even counting INSIDIOUS). I thought the director's LIGHTS OUT was a fair shake better.
