My humble homage in fiction to Poe & Lovecraft, for the Halloween season. A werewolf tale I did for the mag several years ago is being dramatized for blog radio as "The Girl in the Crimson Cloak." (Since I'm not actually involved with the group doing this, I hope I'm not violating any self-promotion rules, here. If so, David or Kerry, drop me a pm.) Oct 15 07 9:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Don't know if the new issue is the one with Karloff as The Mummy on the cover, but I was at a major bookstore yesterday and saw the issue on the stands and glanced through it. I must say I nearly bought it because it certainly pushes that warm and fuzzy nostalgia button, but once I saw yet again that the photo reproduction was absolutely horrible, and that I couldn't enjoy all the vintage "ads" because they were so smudgy, I placed it right back on the shelf. I wouldn't call the photos "atrocious" . I will say that the photos in SCARY MONSTERS are as good as or in some cases better than those in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s monster magazines that we pattern A Real Monster Magazine after. Sorry, but this is a load of hooey, at least with regard to FAMOUS MONSTERS of that period. With the new SCARY MONSTERS I saw pictures of people with their faces washed out to the point where their heads were almost a white dot. Besides, all other "modern" mags like MONSTERS FROM THE VAULT, SCARLET STREET, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, MIDNIGHT MARQUEE, etc., have been able to print quality pics. The author informs me that the latest Halloween trip is planned and yes, there will be another HALLOWEEN GREETINGS FROM EERIE ENGLAND! article next year. I especially like Terry Beatty's Mummy wraparound cover and Tom Triman's Mummy article. And I can't wait to delve into the Zorro retrospective, a piece of my childhood that has been woefully undercovered over the years (My goodness, there's even a sidebar on Britt Lomand, who played the Commandante!) There's also a nice roundup of Japanese monster flicks, including ATRAGON, and an elegant look at Dwight Frye by Prof. Griffin. One thing that makes SCARY MONSTERS essential is its coverage of monster collectibles, and this issue features 7-inch records, Ben Cooper costumes and more. You don't get that stuff anywhere else -- although the new RUE MORGUE does have a spread on monster breakfast cereals. Hmmm... Nice stuff. david david Rondo VI is here!

I've collected Monster cereral boxes for decades along with various toys and promotional items featuring Count Chocula, Frankenberry, Boo Berry, and Yummy Mummy so my kitchen is full of those items (that's were I keep the stuff) so the atmosphere will be perfect! I'm still surprised at the overwhelming reaction to that article I've received since it first appeared (both reader response and Rondo nomination). Can't help but wonder what the neighbors would have thought, had they heard the endless versions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL running in my den during those months of research and writing. ("Doesn't he own anything else? Maybe we should get him the Charlie Brown show....")
