Can I Run "The Black Cat" Around Here Again?

Oct 8 07 6:09 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've never seen this on the big screen. I think that would be a pretty special experience. There isn't enough opportunity to see these classic movies with an audience in the dark. I think as far as themes go, I read recently that the principal theme of the film is the relationship between America and Europe, with the Allisons representing the new young nation blundering into the complex and long-enduring relationship between the members of Old Europe, Karloff and Lugosi, without the cultural/historic knowledge to understand the relationships, and suffering in consequence. Any thoughts?

Oct 8 07 9:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I should make some more comments about the experience of seeing it on the big screen. The "satanic ritual" scene packed punches when the camera jumped to show the tuxedo'd audience leering at the girl tied to the cross. However, it was obvious on the big screen that Lugosi and Karloff were playing to the back row and using stage actor techniques. At this stage of sound film, they still hadn't got the subtle part down. But that would all change in a year or two... "It's alive!" Z7 Headquarters

Mar 22 08 12:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Catching up on a little reading here today, and I'm now looking at a NY TIMES DVD review of Kino's GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM COLLECTION from a coupla weeks ago. It mentions that CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI "received its first public screening at the Marmorhaus, a Berlin theater." Maybe this is long-known, or long-ago discussed and debunked and I'm out of the loop ... but is it possible that that theater name was the inspiration for "Fort Marmorhaus" (or however you spell it) in THE BLACK CAT?

Mar 22 08 6:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Marmorhaus opened in 1913 and the name translates as 'Marblehouse', which is appropriate as the facade is completely covered in white marble slabs. Original seating was for 620 in orchestra and balcony levels. The architect was Hugo Pal. The interior was twinned in 1972 and further sub-divided into 4 screens in 1975 which destroyed the original interior decorations. The cinema closed in 1999 and the interior was stripped out and gutted. Today it serves as a retail clothing shop, but still has the original 'Marmorhaus' blue neon name sign on the freshly cleaned marble facade. Ulmer certainly would have been aware of this famous Berlin theatre/landmark when co-writing the screenplay (certainly looks like an imposing and impressive structure...probably even moreso in 1934). I included The Black Cat in my Universal Top Ten in another thread and looked up the following; the Hays office was open for business in 1930 but didn't really begin pulling the reins in on sordid and lurid film material until July 1, 1934, under Joseph Breen. The Black Cat was released on May 7, 1934, beating the enforcement of the production code by close to two months. I'm not aware that The Black Cat was re-released in 1938 or in the early 1940's, but it was re-released in the late 40's and early 50's. At one point it was released under the title The Vanishing Body. I can't imagine The Black Cat getting by the Hays Office intact at that time. Was the film heavily cut?
