And is this 1:37 vs. 1:33 question in fact why these pre-1950s films need this underscanning/'windowboxing'? "Snips and snails and poppydoc tails...."

It kept me from buying the movie for some time thinking the transfer was just as bad as the effort hinted by the lousy cover. Just like the Alpha covers are great eye catchers but the movies can be pure junk so... there you go. Marketing. Eric

This reminds me of something I didn't know about back when I was heavy into Super 8, but only learned about just a few years ago: Many projectors (at least, in the Super 8 gauge) have gates that keep you from seeing quite a bit of the actual film frame. In the Nineties, as Super 8 was making something of a comeback (there are companies in England now licensing new prints of some recent features and classics with distributors here in the U.S.), a few publications discussed the gate being too small, and talked about how you could get your projector modified to give you the full image. I had one of my machines modified, and was amazed at how much more I could see in my Super 8 prints of features and shorts, as well as my old student films.
