...stuff which everybody thinks is obvious but which I didn't notice.
This was inspired by Dave Sindelar's Movie of the Day review of THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION. I was reminded of the big joke of the Volkswagen masquerading as a spider. That is funny, except...I never noticed it. I saw the movie in its initial release, I recognized it was a bad movie with lousy effects. But it never occurred to me that there was a Beetle under that arachnid. Am I that dumb?
The infamous cardboard on the lamp in DRACULA... never knew it was there till it was pointed out to me in, I think, one of Dave Skal's books. To this day, unless I remind myself to look for it, I don't notice it. And I've seen the movie many many times since learning of the corrugated offender. Am I that blind?
The cuts and stuntmen in FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN... Until learning from the monster mags about all the stunt men subbing for Lugosi, I never noticed that there were different guys wearing the neck bolts. And the scenes of Bela mouthing excised dialogue...nope, never saw 'em. Am I that clueless?
And, maybe worst of all...the dogs playing the roles of THE KILLER SHREWS... I saw this in the theater when I was eleven or twelve and I seriously loved it. But I didn't know those were dogs playing the shrews. I knew they weren't real giant shrews and they didn't seem to be stop-motion things, but it just never occurred to me that they were pooches. Now, of course, it's obvious even to me, but I know that when I first read that those were dogs (can't remember when or where I first read that), I didn't believe it. I thought the writer was either mistaken or joking. Because surely even as a little kid I would have known those were dogs. Wouldn't I? Or am I really that hopelessly moronic?
I invite others to profess their ignorance, stupidity, blindness, or general hopelessness. But I don't know how many of these "obvious" things there are. Maybe I've already claimed them all for my own. Anyway, that's why I'm so dumb.
