May 18 12 3:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	<< one last question - when the show moves into the past, does it stay there, or is have the show in the past and half in the present << It goes back and forth a little for a few days at the beginning and end of such sequences, depending on what "method" of travel is used (different each time, and cleverly done), but basically stays in the past for weeks at a time, sometimes even months. Y'know, without checking, I'm not sure that 'CURSE' disc is all flashback so much as an actual time travel trip that revisits past events. But you don't want to miss the buildup to it in any case. It's worth the patience.

Incidentally, Dan Curtis Productions made a decent version of 'The Turn of The Screw' later on, which even featured Kathryn Leigh Scott as the ghost of that infamous Jessel woman.

Jan 23 13 7:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Urgh. I feel I'm doomed. I may have gotten infected by this damn show. I've watched about 131 eps from when Barnabas appears. I'd watched about 30 of the earlier ones quite a while back. Hard to pin down the appeal -- kitsch factor? No, it's more than that. It drifts along leisurely and it's easy to see why it's an acquired taste. I like how Barnabas goes from being rather sinister and odious (I was pretty much hating him during the Maggie Captive period) to increasingly pathetic, paranoid and ineffectual. He spends his nights pacing up and down the Old House worrying about how everyone's out to get him. This growing fragility -- I assume it gets even more pronounced -- is strangely appealing. And quite funny sometimes. (I get the impression this isn't entirely unintentional.) I quite liked the Depp movie for what it was (but WHAT was it?, was the main problem). But I love this stuff. Am fearing the extended flashbacks and stuff, though. Whenever I get that far. Not sure why.

Well, I guess we'll have to say that she has a lot of lovely features, and the Hammer House of Horror episode 'Visitor From The Grave' actually shows them off rather nicely! Even with all the flubbed lines.

Apr 9 13 1:04 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've been watching this for a while now via Netflix, and still retain dim Monster Kid memories of the show from its original run (7 in '66). I'm up to the point now where one character has gone missing in/over the Amazon and Barnabas has a new thrall, coming about from one of the scarier episodes to this point. It's funny for all the conventionally attractive women on the show (as ably pointed out by many already) the female character who actually seems to get the most serious close up face time is Grayson Hall as Dr. Julia Hoffman. She has a kind of late Joan Crawford vibe and after Barnabas is probably the most interesting character on the show (so far). Has anyone else ever watched Joe Haskell (the late Joel Crothers) and thought, 'that guy would have made an awesome Bruce Wayne?' He looks just like a typical DC hero. Apr 14 13 9:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The wifey (odd to type that now...) and I recently zipped through collections 1 and 2 of Dark Shadows, and I'm wondering at what point Barnabas Collins makes the shift to romantic hero that made all the teens go crazy? He's firmly cast as the villain in these early episodes, and the stuff he does (such as locking up Maggie and mentally torturing her into becoming his new Josette) doesn't really help to endear him. Having never seen these episodes, it's interesting watching he and Dr. Hoffman verbally spar. Quite a difference from later in the series when she's basically his lap dog. "The important question is not, are there aliens on other worlds? No. The important question is, do they have ray guns?"

I actually find some of the Maggie stuff difficult to watch because it's so psychologically twisted. I can't believe they got away with showing this at a 3:30 p.m. slot in the afternoon. Barn's transition to a more heroic stance starts really with the 1795 storyline, which you'll see in due course if you keep following along from where you are now. Down almost to the very end, he has moments however when his more "Mr. Hyde" side starts to come out again. Julia does resist, or flatly refuse to go along with what Barnabas wants in some of the later stories, but it's rare, and she usually winds up helping to clean up the mess he makes afterwards anyway. It's really too bad the storyline pretty much fell apart in the final months, with no resolution at all to the main characters' story, and an irrelevant appendage set in Parallel Time 1841 for the concluding weeks. H.

Apr 15 13 4:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was a teenaager when this came on and it is very dear to my heart, along with Lara Parker and Kathryn Leigh Scott. For folks who find it slow, remember it was a soap opera and that was to be expected. I think Barnbas was originally scheduled for a six-week run but the fan mail was so great for him that they continued with him and the rest is history. Neither Ben Cross (90's version) or Johnny Depp (current movie) do Jonathan Frid justice. Anyone, they toughed on everything just about ghosts, possession, werewolves, witches, time travel, etc. I don't want to leave out the wonderful Nicholas Blair (H. H. Asterdo) who should have had more tv time opposite Barnabas. But the sparing between Nicholas and Angelique was great. There are Star Trek fans, Dr. Who fans and us Dark Shadows fans.
