Although people have dropped comments like "Elizabeth's problem was that she had no sense of humor," others have said that the real issue came about because Shepherd wanted input on the scripts and started changing material on her own. Also, the reason Bryce was let go so soon after he was brought back wasn't so much that his new (old) dramatic approach wasn't working, it was rather because he quickly fell behind schedule filming episodes (it seems Bryce, used to working on the series when it was videotaped, couldn't adapt to the scheduling demands of shooting on film).

This is an interesting point -- I wonder, pure connecting-the-dots speculation, if this relates to Diana Rigg's continual unhappiness with the producers being overly controlling and "cattle herding" her around. They had a bad experience with Shepherd and went the extra mile to ensure Rigg didn't "get out of line"? Those are the same two photos that appear in my post, except you seem to have found a sharper-looking copy of the shot with Shepherd with the ammo belt. Aren't they showing up on your screen? (Anyone else having trouble seeing them?)

Someone with more tech-savvy might know: Could the problem have been because I deleted the shots from my PhotoBucket account after posting them here? May 23 09 7:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've just started watching some of the Rigg episodes after not having seen the show in probably 30 years. I took a chance on a good special on the Super Mega Diana Emma Peel Megaset (or whatever it was called) and I'm enjoying it more than most anything else I'm watching at the moment. My question(s) is... once I'm done this 51 episode set... where else should I start with on this great show? The first Blackman episodes? Move on to the Thorson era? Can anyone direct me? Jul 16 09 6:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm an unabashed fan, so I (eventually) bought the entire series, plus THE NEW AVENGERS. The best Rigg episodes are the pinnacle of the series, it doesn't get any better, but all incarnations of the series have much to recommend them (with the possible exception of the back end of the NEW AVENGERS series, and of course, the 1998 theatrical abomination, the less said of that, the better). My advice is, if you can find them these days, to move on to the Thorson episodes next, since the last Rigg episode is really the first Thorson episode. Then go back to the beginning, starting with the surviving Ian Hendry episodes on the bonus disc in your Emma Peel Mega-Set. Then, if you like what you see, try the 1962 set, where Honor Blackman begins her run. I'd save THE NEW AVENGERS for last, as it's a seperate series (though a follow-up). If you eventually get through all that, and still want more (especially if you enjoyed the shot-on-videotape Hendry and Blackman episodes), try ADAM ADAMANT LIVES! via British R2 DVD, provided that you have (or plan to get) a cheap, region-free player. Jul 19 09 10:48 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Wow, hadn't realized these had gone out of print and the prices were climbing. I've been dawdling on picking up a few of the Honor Blackman sets (vaguely hoping against hope for a more inexpensive and compact format reissue) on DVD, but have all the ones done on film including THE NEW AVENGERS. It's a double-edged sword these started coming out so early on DVD, because they only did 'restoration' work on the Emma Peel color shows, and even that cleanup by today's standards is not so hot. Some of the Thorson episodes in particular look really lousy, with sickly greenish color and lots of damage. Hopefully whatever the next format iteration is, won't force you to buy 5 separate 6-7 episode sets to complete a single season!

Jul 24 09 12:32 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	When those sets vanished, they vanished quick. A&E had marked all the Linda Thorson sets down, so I started buying some of those. Went back to pick up another, and nearly all the AVENGERS sets were gone from the site. Same thing with Deep Discount. I noticed they had some of the Honor Blackman sets marked way down. Just a couple of days later they were either no longer listed or marked as "no longer available."

Jul 24 09 2:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm surprised even the '62 set, the last released containing the earliest Blackman episodes, is out of print, as that didn't come out too long ago. That's the only one I really 'need' to complete the series, as I have the other Blackmans on either DVD or the VHS pre-records (yeah, I'm a dinosaur ... you'll pry that VCR out of my cold dead hands!). I wonder if A&E's license to distribute them on DVD expired.

In addition to letting me upgrade my old VHS prerecord of "Death of a Great Dane," it would have also let me finally see some Venus Smith episodes.

Jul 24 09 5:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I also recall reading that there was some more/better digital cleanup done on the video and audio on the '62 box, as compared to the earlier Blackman sets (the kinescopes can use all the help they can get), so I guess it is time to hit the secondary market for that one. Venus is on some of the '63 shows. She's curious fun as kind of a proto-Tara lightweight, but Mrs. Gale is sorely missed!

They did show all the Venus episodes, though, and that other Dr. that was in one or two of them too. Steed doesn't always come off as quite so suave and debonair when he has to do it in one take live.

(I think I read those scripts had originally been intended for Hendry's Dr. Keel character.) Always wondered if Dr. King and Tara King would have been revealed as relatives, had the series continued. I have The Best of the Original Avengers collection. This way I get a sampling of Nancy, Emma & Tara. I grabbed that as well when it first came out. (As I was on the fence about collecting the whole lot.) Also grabbed up that "bonus DVD" from the Emma Peel set, as A&E offered it on its own for those who already had all the Emma adventures. It gives you the surviving footage from the first episode, as well as a sampling of Dr. King, some rare promos, etc.

I don't think there is any series that can match the constant run of his episodes the show enjoyed with Diana Rigg. It stands the test of time very well & I doubt you'll find a more liberated female characters on TV today than Emma Peel or Cathy Gale My favourites are the Monochrome Emma Peel episodes when the show still had one foot on the ground. Patrick Macnee & Diana Rigg make a stellar 'once in a lifetime' combination.
