The wrenching family verite of THE SOPRANOS was shown once again tonight as HBO debuted the first of the final nine episodes.
While it's fun to wonder who might get whacked and the rest, the truth is that the characters themselves have transcended the storyline and tonight, especially, it felt like overhearing neighbors and relatives I grew up with.
The thought of this show finally ending is almost like a death. I'm sure the end, whatever it turns out to be, will satisfy few -- especially those who see this as a morality play rather than a window on the ambiguity of unchecked power -- but I prefer to enjoy each episode as a very precious moment that won't come again for a long long time. Even in television years.
