Oct 8 06 6:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just watched the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD DVD with Mike Nelson commentary- got the feeling Mike thought of it as just a stupid old B-movie, and was thrown a little bit by how strong the film's kick still is (at one point, he says, unironically, "that's disturbing"; during the closing images, he's a little bit sombre, even...) Has anyone out there tried any of these RIFFTRAX things out yet?

Oct 9 06 2:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	For the uninitiated: RIFFTRAX is a new website (don't have a link, but you can get one off the Wickipedia listing for MST3) where Mike provides downloadable commentaries for films (sometimes joined by other members of the gang). The idea is, you play the commentaries while watching a DVD of the movie in question at the same time- thus avoiding the question of rights aquisition (and opening the door to doing commentaries on any film they want, rather than just the ones they can afford to).In theory, an interesting idea; but I'm not set up for Internet commerce (by choice- I know my weaknesses).

Nov 4 06 11:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just to let everyone know, Rhino has lost the rights to all four films featured on the Vol 1 DVD collection. They are CATALINA CAPER, THE CREEPING TERROR, BLOODLUST, & SKY DIVERS. If you don`t yet have this set, snap it up before it goes completely OOP. Also, Rhino will lose the rights to THE SIDEHACKERS on Vol 3 this coming March. Another set to snap up. Finally, Vol 10 has disappeared from the Rhino site and rumors have rights problems on one or more of the films thereon: GODZILLA VS MEGALON, SWAMP DIAMONDS, TEENAGE STRANGLER, & THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION. Again, if you want a copy, be sure to snap one up before it is too late. Vol 11 is scheduled to debut this coming February. Unknown at this time what films will be on the set.

I wish they'd put out one of their best episodes, THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN, which had a VHS release. I remember several years ago, one of the producers of Don Glut's DINOSAUR VALLEY GIRLS told me that the MST3K people had contacted them about doing their movie. He said they were considering it, and I practically begged them to. For whatever reason, they didn't. DOCTOR 13

I saw this info (thanks rvoyttbots) and immediately bought set #1 at Tower Records (where that liquidation discount keeps getting bigger each week). I don't have set # 3, but I have a few of the films from it on VHS. As I stated earlier in this thread (I think), I have every show from every season on DVD-R (except for several of the earlier Rhino releases). A few years ago, several people were selling DVD-R's of each season on e-Bay. I snatched them all up (for a total cost of around $200) and I've never regreted it. Now, when Rhino releases these sets, I already have every film that's on them. So, the only reason I would get a new Rhino set is if it had a really tempting extra or two.

Second - the notion that it has caused people to view old films with derision and make comments about them, to me doesn't hold water. In the original the blob, the teenagers and adults were watching a so-called Bela Lugosi (I know it wasn't a real film) film and were goofing on it without remorse (besides one old man). It seems to me then that ribbing a b-move at the theater existed 40/50 years ago. I think it is more intense today because the younger generations don't understand anything from 10 years ago let alone 30 or 40 or more. This doesn't have anything to do with MST3k. Hell most people haven't even heard of it (particularly in Canada where I'm from). If its not someones thing thats cool but I can't see how the show can be blamed for the chatter in theaters. The show just wasn't main stream enough. But that's just my opinion.

And right you are. I've already pointed out several times the true causes (yes, there are several) of people making jokes and/or talking in theaters. And Ryan Brennan mentioned that people read title cards out loud back in the silent days. So talking back to the screen has a long and varied history, of which MST3K played little part. One thing I haven't pointed out is that most of the people who criticize MST3K have the attitude that all films are sacred and deserve to be seen as their makers intended. I'm ambivalent on this myself. On one hand, I'd hate the thought that if I made a heartfelt film it might end up being so ridiculed. But on the other hand, 90% of what MST3K showed was basically worthless and more than likely never to see the light of day. What they did to those films made them something special, something memorable. In many cases, something truly great.

"Snips and snails and poppydoc tails...."
