Recently I’ve been thinking about re-viewing some movies I haven’t seen in a long time. Just tonight -- against all my best instincts -- I watched THE UNDERWATER CITY on GET-TV. It was the first time I”d seen it since a Saturday matinee at my local bijou on September 8, 1962. Just six days shy of 52 years ago. It still stinks but at least it looked prettier this time because it was in color. In theatrical release it was black and white only.
And, because of recent discussions on the Board I’ve decided I need to revisit:
GALLERY OF HORRORS which I haven’t seen since it was new, a drive-in showing on October 14, 1967
STAR TREK V which I watched on VHS once only, shortly after it was released on that medium
REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN, which I’ve seen 3 or 4 times, but not since the late ‘60s or early ‘70s, and which I’ve never seen without commercial interruptions or, I think, in color. About time for that, I think.
So this made me get my old, crumbling records off the shelf. I used to, for years, keep careful note of what monster movies I saw and when. I decided I needed to revisit any movie on the list which I had seen only once, and that one viewing was at least 50 years ago. 50 years...unbelievable.
So, here are the movies I’ll try to take a long-overdue second look at before the end of the year, title is followed by the date of my only previous viewing.
JACK THE RIPPER June 25, 1960
MOST DANGEROUS MAN ALIVE July 1, 1961
PREHISTORIC WOMEN July 1, 1961
TERROR OF THE TONGS October 1, 1961
SHADOW OF THE CAT October 29, 1961
BEFORE I HANG April 14, 1962
THE MINOTAUR, WILD BEAST OF CRETE April 15, 1962
KONGA July 29, 1961
RED PLANET MARS April 20, 1963
MACABRE October 31, 1964
Most of these were never viewed again for good reason -- I just never felt the need. And I absolutely can’t believe that I’ve only seen BEFORE I HANG one time. But that’s what my records say, and I was pretty careful with them.
I’m very much wondering if the years will have altered my opinions much. We shall see.
Anybody else need to re-visit any apecific titles? I realize that not many folks, probably no one actually, kept the kind of records I did. And most folks around here aren't quite as aged as I am. Still...
