Love the Kolchak series! It's got just the right mix of humor and real scares. I only saw the Sentry episode in it's original run as a kid, but I caught up with the series when it was rerun on CBS latenight in the late 80's/early 90's.

I believe the 3rd tv movie, had it happened would have seen Kolchak fighting against androids that were replacing world leaders. That's right - Futureworld done in the Kolchak format! I believe it was written up as a full script by Richard Matheson, but it was never finished.

I don't think that McGavin had a problem with Dan Curtis, but the production had a major problem with Jeff Rice, who hadn't given his permission to make the series. He was actually suing the producers when it was cancelled. I also think that McGavin always saw the show as beyond genre - he didn't want it to be just fighting a monster-of-the-week, but he also wanted Kolchak to investigate more earthly cases to contrast the monsters, and not stretch credulity. I believe by the end, he was fairly fed up with the series and didn't even fullfill the normal network order of episodes. Not that he looked down on the work, I think it just wasn't what he wanted in the end. One early problem was the crazy younger female coworker (Vincenzo's sister) who producers insisted be dropped from the series. I also think the original showrunner for the show was fired pretty early on.

There were two scripts that were commisioned but not filmed for the tv show, but those were eventually adapted in comic form by the Moonstone Kolchak comic series. One was about a demon in a mine, I don't recall what the other one was.

As far as favorite episodes, I still like the Sentry pretty well, but I also really enjoy Spanish Moss, the Aztec Mummy one, the witch one with Laura Parker, and the tablet demon one that features Caroline Jones in a cameo. Actually, I really like pretty much the entire series, with the weakest episode being the UFO one (They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be - or whatever it's called). But even it's weakest episode beats the best of most other series!
