(03/13/05 9:48 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Hi All, New guy here. Just found this cool site. Love it! Any fans of Kolchak: The Night Stalker series or movies? I have all 20 episodes and both movies on VHS from Columbia House (ordered them in the early 90's. Cost me about $200 at the time). Also have the new DVD of the two movies (with the cool Dan Curtis interview featurettes). I also have both versions of the awesome Kolchak Companion book by the great Mark Dawidziak (the original 20th Anniversary large soft back and the new and expanded version (which is far more common)). I used to watch the show with my father in 1974/75 when it was on Friday nights. I was seven/eight years old then. I was so scared of the monsters and I loved Kolchak. I never missed an episode! Just curious if anyone else has Kolchak memories out there? Favorite episodes, scenes, etc...

(03/13/05 11:53 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	My favorite episode (besides THE NIGHT STALKER movie, of course) is the one with the shape-shifting monster. I love it at the end when it takes on the appearance of the old lady (can't remember her name) and Kolchak gives it to 'er in the chest with a crossbow. She has a "Why, Carl?" look for a split-second, then reverts back to the huge, snarling beast before dying. This was such a great show to watch back when there wasn't a lot of good genre stuff on TV or at the movies. I especially liked the way Kolchak would turn tail and run when he got scared. I could identify with that. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

The creature is called The Rakshasa, which is why I picked my screen name. It's my favorite episode too! Cool man, thanks for replying!

Interestingly, the episode was written by Jimmy Sangster, the writer responsible for many of my favorite horror films from Hammer Studios. I especially enjoy the notion that Carl believes that there is no one he trusts...a disbelief which almost does him in! Martin

It's almost impossible to consider anyone else playing Carl Kolchak as it is, and, sadly, they went in an entirely different direction totally unlike the established aspect of the character as we know him. Personally, I think someone like Fred Ward might have worked. Obviously, as is, I'll pass on this new series. Martin

Even tho media and reporting and technology has changed (newspapers are shutting down all over the country)--Karl should be older and experienced, a hard newspaperman from a by-gone age. I think the anachronisms could be worked in an updating. But by casting younger (and giving him a partner)--this just isn't Karl Kolchak. 'nuff said. Why not just revive and continue X-Files? Or create a new series and think of a new title?

As to the Night Stalker, I remember watching it during the 1990's on Sci-Fi back when they were running a lot of vintage shows. It was entertaining and humorous. Darrin McGavin, who I was already familiar with from The Martian Chronicles, Hanger 18, A Christmas Story, Airport '77 and TV shows like Tales from the Darkside, was the reason I tuned it. As I understand it, McGavin and Dan Curtis are not on friendly terms. If I am getting this right, Curtis got control over the series that McGavin created. Regardless, from what I am reading on this thread, the remake will forsake the original show's integrity...the character Carl Kolchak. It doesn't surprise me that they gave the part to a younger actor. The third reincarnation of Dark Shadows saw a very young Barnabas Collins. But let us remember, television and film are a media of images. And today's stories sell to younger crowds through younger casting. I don't always agree with this. But it is marketing.

He wasn't involved in the TV series.

(08/30/07 5:18 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	One of my All-Time favorite shows on TV it was a real crime McGavin never got to reprise his role (the best TV character ever if you ask me) after the TV show was prematurely cancelled. I just re-watched the two fantastic TV movies that preceded the show and I noticed that Kolchak seemed a little more suave than he did in the TV series perhaps because he had a love interest in both of the movies but no such relationships in the short lived series. I never got to watch the recent NIGHT STALKER series that went off the air before I knew is this one worth checking out as a life long Kolchak fan?
