Whatever condition the episodes are in, it's got to be a step above how they looked on the old Motorola in the '60s. Besides, I've seen some of the U.N.C.L.E. movies in a theatre, and it's not always good to view things too big and clearly!

Jul 1 08 8:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was gonna wait til they put 'em out in single season sets, since I'm not sure I need EVERY single episode (I stopped buying WILD WILD WEST after Season 2), but since this set also includes the movies and other assorted goodies for a reasonable price, I couldn't stop my finger from impulsively hitting that damn One-Click button. Still don't know what I'm gonna do with that silly attache case, though....

Still think you got a heluva deal though. And with the additional savings, you can spring for the four volume cd set from Film Score Monthly! Still don't know what I'm gonna do with that silly attache case, though.... Laptop storage? LCD projector case? Sandwich and thermos?

Jul 2 08 8:40 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm talking about the recent "remastered" ones,Hal.Though from what I've read on places like Home Theatre Forum,they seem to be using the same masters.The show is still worth getting for the price (as riotengine has stated above) because the show is wonderful,but to my eyes nothing on the U.N.C.L.E. set is nearly as wanting in picture as these.

And the random broadcast order. And this is certainly an improvement in both those departments (even without the 20% sale). Wish I'd remembered last week that these would be out by now . Oh well, it'll be a Stooges and Spy filled fall . Thanks again, guys!

The attache case thingy is actually pretty cool, and not as bulky as I thought it'd be. So far I've only watched the bonus disc from Season One: the "making of" featurette, the mini-doc spotlighting the guest stars, and just finished watching the "Solo" pilot. Forgot what a big crush I had on Patricia Crowley as a kid. Looking forward to watching the rest of the set, in order. So far so good.

Is there a definite cut-off point, where things stop being (again, relatively) serious, and dive head-long into camp silliness, or is it a more gradual process, with alternating straight and silly eps? The reason I'm asking is because Time-Life's website offers each of the four seasons for sale individually, and has a site-wide 10% discount offer running at the moment (expiring in mid-May). If I pull the trigger and order, say, Seasons 1, 2 & 4 by this method, I can get the essential stuff for $121 (including shipping) --about $30 cheaper than what DeepDiscount, Amazon, etc are offering for the Complete Series set. And I can save on shipping if I get all the seasons I'd want as one order. I watched the show off-and-on during TNT's early days, but the color shows are mostly a jumble in my mind. I know I don't want Season 3 at all (unless I can get the Complete Set so cheaply that S3 is essentially a free "bonus") --some of that material, like the Sonny & Cher episode, are unfortunately burned into my brain-- and Seasons 1 & 4 are definites, so the unknown quantity is Season 2. If it's mostly good, I'll buy; if it's a couple of strong initial episodes, followed mainly by drek... pfffft. I'm aware that there are a couple of bonus discs that are exclusive to the Complete Series set, plus the long-form interview with Vaughn & McCallum included in the Season 3 package, but that stuff (cool as it may be) isn't worth an extra $30 to me. (See George Lazenby's cameo as James Bond, er, "JB" of Her Majesty's Secret Service one last time.)

Apr 23 09 1:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sure there's SOME silly stuff in each season (less in Season 4, but even those episodes aren't without humor). Season 2 really has a lot to recommend it. Villains played by Vincent Price, Patricia Medina, Rip Torn, Victor Buono, George Sanders, John McGiver (and his killer bees), Jeanne Cooper (as Mother Fear), Kevin McCarthy (in an episode that introduced Girl From U.N.C.L.E. April Dancer), Eve Arden, and Martin Landau (doing a warm-up of his Bela Lugosi impersonation). In that season though, you can see some of the signs of transitioning to the ultra-campy and comparitively lackluster Season 3. The episode with Sonny & Cher was the worst of all episodes. I'm re-visiting Season 4 now, where the series bounced back well, even though by that time the death knell was sounding from the powers that were, and the season was a short, but good one.

One of the ones with George is in black and white, so I figure it's an early one. However, I don't know, but even that one (also starring Jeanette Nolan), is pretty silly. I don't don't think The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ever really was serious, as was, for instance, The Saint.

Despite my hassles with them in the past, and my own loathing of season three, I couldn't pass up the one-day sale they had on this a month ago. 47 bucks for the whole shebang. Yes, they were obviously deluged with orders, so it took a month to arrive, but it's easily one of the greatest bargains I've ever found. I've watched the first three episodes already and they're quite addictive. I've only caught a few of them when it was run on The American Life cable channel, otherwise I haven't seen any of them since the run on NBC.

But my hopes are high that they won't be that bad. Or is that just childish naivety? I hear Napoleon dances with a gorilla in Season 2 (or is it Season 3). Well, at least I'll have an idea of what I'm in for.

Mar 10 12 10:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some of the Season 2's and 3's are borderline-unbearable IMHO. But there are okay ones now and then (especially if you're partial to the casts), and then in Season 4 the show gets good again.
