Good news for fans of the Universal Monsters the fiasco that was Van Helsing did not completely kill off their interest in keeping the Universal Monsters legacy alive. Variety reports today that Universal is set to remake the 1941 horror classic The Wolf Man with Benicio Del Toro in the role that defined the career of Lon Chaney Jr. According to reports, Del Toro is a huge fan of the original and even collects Wolf Man memorabilia.
The project came about after meetings between Universal execs, Del Toro, and screenwriter Kevin Walker, who previously penned Seven and will now do scripting duties on the Wolf Man remake. Like the original, the new version will be set in Victorian England, with Del Toro in the role a man who returns from America to his ancestral homeland, gets bitten by a werewolf, and cursed with lycanthropy. Walker is reportedly already planning some new twists on the classic tale, many of which will take advantage of the latest in cutting edge special effects. I just hope they turn it into a bloated orgy of special effects overkill. Still, as long as none of it involves transforming back and forth between human and werewolf form whenever clouds pass in front of the moon, they've already done something right.
Universal plans to make the remake one of their tentpole flicks of summer 2008, which means we'll be reporting on this one for quite some time to come.
