(Evidently, by the way, she's 30. That's certainly younger than me or probably most of the rest of us, but it ain't exactly junior high.)Unlike me, of course, Taraco is still in the newspaper biz. David, would that sort of (ir)rationale fly at USA Today? It sure as heck wouldn't at the Gannett paper where I used to work as metro editor, or at the dailies I labored for before that.

OMG - did you read her letter asking the blog about her plagiarism to be removed? She cut & pasted that too! UN-figgin-believable.

And good for him. To address your earlier post, I have nothing whatosever against Tim, but I thought he wrote in error in the first instance -- obviously, he has concluded the same -- & I don't think that saying so amounted to "aspir(ing) to instantly nullify a brilliant reputation and decades' worth of achievement," though of course I can't speak for others. I'd have said the same if, god forbid, he were to assert that ... I don't know ... "Mario Bava directed The Beyond," or whatever. That would of course be incorrect, though it would only mean that Tim had erred, not that he was somehow evil. As for "the anonymity of the internet," my name is Dan Bailey, late of the Magnolia Banner-News, Slidell Sentry-News, Arkansas Democrat, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Arkansas Business, Montgomery Advertiser & (as a freelancer) Philadelphia Business Journal ... though if no one minds I'll continue to post here & a few other places (most frequently Baseball Think Factory, of all places) as a certain Depression-era poltergeist from the Isle of Man.There -- no more anonymity! Tim has definitely taken the high road here. It's painful to see such a gentleman & scholar learn the hard way (& undoubtedly not for the first time, since it seems to happen to us all, time & time again) that "no good deed goes unpunished."*sigh*

He's been a friend for many years; we have spent a fair amount of time together. He's also been a friend to the genre--dedicating his life to it, really--for decades. To me Tim's handling of this stems from a simple generosity of spirit. That, and a desire to assess situations based on his own personal and professional relationships with individuals. And though I may not agree with him I think I can understand where he's coming from and his reticence to join a dog-piling, whether or not it is justifiable. (And no, I have not communicated with Tim about this; this is simply my opinion.) Some years ago Tim bore the brunt of a malicious and persistent campaign by some individuals connected to the now-defunct Scarlet Street magazine who characterized every delay of his then-forthcoming Bava book--delays meant to publish the best book possible--as evidence of fraud. Fans of the genre trusted Tim Lucas then and I suspect they will continue to give Tim Lucas the benefit of the doubt even if they disagree with him in this case. I think a lifetime devoted to the genre and his readers have earned Tim a bank of credibilty and that right. And whether one disagrees with Tim or not he signs his name to everything he writes, whether it's on the printed page or on the internet, which makes things easy for people like me who want to tap into more credibility than "a journalist I respect."

Had she been voted Best Writer, then that would be different. But the Rondo win for their site stands unless evidence emerges that their freeform talk show somehow was tainted. It does not appear it was. If folks want to give the Rondo win a mental asterisk, that is their privilege.

What she did was totally and completely unacceptable. The editors and writers she violated should be rightfully angry. There are no excuses. But there are limits to Internet glee and gloating. Someone who has transgressed deserves to be criticized, even shunned, but not attacked for who she is, how she looks or even who she loves. Online bullying comes in many forms, and the CHFB won't allow pile-on attacks here. Especially by anonymous members who hide their identities.Lianne Spiderbaby screwed up bigtime. All you have to do is look at the evidence. But she deserves what everybody deserves, the chance to redeem herself someday and even more, just plain human dignity. For those who disagree, there are other places to display your rage. Here at the CHFB, we prefer a professional discussion. Please think about this as we go forward. And thanks for listening.david coltonadministratorClassic Horror Film Board

And sure, I understand some people are disappointed with Tim's position. But I DO know Tim. I AM aware of his overall contributions to the genre. I know what kind of human being he is and I know what kind of editor he is (I've had the honor and pleasure to write for Video Watchdog)...I do not believe Tim's stance justifies attacks that seem to aspire to instantly nullify a brilliant reputation and decades' worth of achievement. Writers and publishers are upset about the recent revelations of plagiarism and they have a right to be. But people need to watch out for collatoral damage and people should try to avoid acting like a bevy of tricoteuses sitting around the guillotine.

Her review for EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD on Fright Bytes vol. 5 features more stolen work (review around the 10 min. mark). Spiderbaby's words: "In an effort to merge and integrate the softcore and horror industries (and make a quick buck), D'Amato created this film hoping to attract the raincoat crowd and horror fan alike." "The film's plot focuses on a foreign developer who plans on making a tiny, secluded island into a hot spot for yuppie jetsetters." Grindhouse database write up by one Matt Deapo: "In an effort to bridge the gap between the porn and horror industries (and make a quick buck), pioneering filmmaker Joe D'Amato created a flick that he hoped would attract the raincoat crowd and the gore-hounds alike."
