I once sat in Mr. [A.C.] Lyles' office (formerly Danny Thomas') at Paramount and asked him why he produced NIGHT OF THE LEPUS. For those unfamiliar with his ouevre, A.C. Lyles was the producer of a string of low-budget Paramount Westerns (most of the films featured the "BONANZA mountain" street set at some point) crammed with stars on their way down or in the category of "I thought he/she was dead." From that standpoint these movies are terrific to watch as they constitute the last films of many well-known actors and actresses and offered employment when the town had discarded them.Anyway, nestled among his list of Westerns is NIGHT OF THE LEPUS. He said that he decided to do the film because someone convinced him that it would be a big moneymaker. He didn't say whether that was true in the U.S., but he did make a point of mentioning that it was big hit in Europe!
