I've spent a whole life learning to let commercials go in one ear and out the other (and the visual equivalent). I'll be darned if I'm going to make any attempt to pay attention to 'em.

I recall way back when TV GUIDE actually did a color feature spread on a commercial: the first real "Epic Commercial," where Ann Miller did a Busby Berkely-style number. Most Bowl commercials are on such a grand scale. And sometimes, the writing, and the Gimmick, are actually really good.

I guess tossing the TV out the second story is next. Serious answer, though, is that as the Superbowl is the most watched TV event all year long, with the highest ad rates, sponsors' agencies are given the task to spare no creative energy or expense and to top themselves each year. People kill each other in riots in other parts of the world over this game, which for most Americans, is a big snoozefest. It was interesting, especially the last 5 minutes, and some of the commercials were really good. It was a bit heartwarming to hear the late Paul Harvey's voice talking about farmers (although it did remind me a bit of Sid Fields' description of farm life-"zingo!") for a truck commercial and the stain that resembled Joe Montana was also pretty funny. This is when the collective "minds" of advertising agencies go into warp 10 to come up with ideas and come up with the best they can possibly get, which in some cases is great (the kid as Darth Vader for VW) and some cases absolutely suck (literally, with that slurp slurp lip suck session with the hot model and the fat nerdy guy). The best and the worst are talked about.

Feb 4 13 4:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	another thing about the superbowl. why has the halftime show become so visual special effects driven that the performers actual performance has been put in the background? espically madana and bieance .i know i spelled them wrong but do not care enough to fix it. even the who which had no visual effects went through the songs so fast it was not able to be appriciated.

Jeep failed, and Dodge worked (now that I write this I realize the corporate connection!) Jeep made me angry at the blatant emotional manipulation with no tie in to the product, Dodge Ram trucks use the same strategy but the product has a natural tie in. And nothing, I mean nothing Budweiser can ever do will get me to buy one of their beers. No dog, or horse, or frog will ever make me down one of their weak, flavorless, over hyped, over marketed, crappy beers. Why do I have to waste my time outwitting morons?

(At least, I'm GUESSING the showgirls crossing the desert in a bus is a reference to that movie.) Also the BECK'S commercial, for another out-of-the-way reason - I've seen a thousand animated Goldfish, but I've never seen an animated Black Moor Goldfish before.

It's like some sort of bizarre arrested development high school behavior for working adults,where you pretend to not care that everybody else is going to the prom but deep down,you wish you were going to the prom too. Never understood that sort of thing,but there you go.

I never went to my senior prom, either ( although, I did take a girl I knew to her senior prom a few years later ). - GJS
