Channel 11 (WPIX) in New York ran a program called Chiller Theater (not to be confused with subsequent programs of the same name on other channels), and each week featured movies that were absolute dogs. Yet, some of them, even if 98% of the film's running time was trash, contained one sequence that was so effective I would sit through the whole film again and again just to see it, even if it was only a few seconds long.
Ones that come to mind:
FRANKIENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER: The evil scientist gets acid thrown in his face. The quick shot of his grabbing at his suit or smock collar and sinking behind a lab table, his face all mutilated from the burns, was pretty impressive after 75 minutes of phoney-looking monsters and bad acting (except by young John Ashley, who I actually think was underrated and unfortunately not given a chance to act much outside of the genre).
MISSILE TO THE MOON: A suited spaceman, fleeing from the incredibly dumb rock creatures, runs into the direct sunlight and is burned to dust (as if!).
MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL (1957): A full-size, mutated wasp head emerges from some bushes and lifts a fleeing native off his feet. The music cue here and ther sound of the victim's death cry scared the crap out of me. Great wasp face, too. It's a pit the rest of the movie was downhill from there.
Anyone care to add?
