CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN...the trailer advertised ...The horror of the Curse of Frankenstein! It could have been called HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN ...but I think Hammer missed a good opportunity at using the X rating like they did on QUATERMASS XPERIMENTand should have called it FRANKENSTEIN'S XPERIMENT...since it was more about his experiments than any curse.
REVENGE fit the sequel's title...but FRANKENSTEIN was hardly EVIL in that film. A more fitting title: FRANKENSTEIN AND THE HYPNOTIST. And FRANKENSTEIN didn't CREATE WOMAN but switched souls...maybe call it FRANKENSTEIN PLAYS GOD;. FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED should have been titled FRANKENSTEIN GOES UP IN FLAMES....HORROR fit that title (to some in more ways than one) and FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER should have stopped there since he wasn't FROM HELL.
(HORROR OF) DRACULA is OK...but BRIDES OF DRACULA isn't about what the title suggests...DRACULA'S DISCIPLE was better. Then Hammer got real creative: DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS (really could have been called DRACULA'S GUESTS), DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE, TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA, SCARS OF DRACULA (?) the Count left bite marks more than scars...DRACULA AD 1972 and SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA (COUNT DRACULA AND HIS VAMPIRE BRIDE in the US), LEGEND OF THE 7 GOLDEN VAMPIRES (THE 7 BROTHERS (and One Sister) MEET DRACULA in US) round out that series.
CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF might have been more properly called WEREWOLF OF SPAIN (though one might have expected Paul Naschy to star with that title)/
THE MUMMY has the title of the Universal Karloff film but used the Kharis films as inspiration; CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB "borrowed" from the Kharis Universal titles Curse and Tomb; THE MUMMY'S SHROUD fit that film to a "T" but BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB again had little to do with the plot....TERA, THE MUMMY QUEEN fit the plot better.
Hammer did better with their Vampire films: KISS OF THE VAMPIRE, VAMPIRE LOVERS, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE, until we come to TWINS OF EVIL---only one of the twins turned Evil---
maybe VAMPIRE AND THE TWINS....although that doesn't sound as good. VAMPIRE CIRCUS. The Jekyll and Hyde films were perfectly named but HANDS OF THE RIPPER was really about the DAUGHTER OF JACK THE RIPPER.....
Anyone want to suggest their own alternate titles for Hammer Films listed above or the ones I haven't listed yet.
